Wow! Why didn't I think of this sooner... this advice was coming from 2009! Holy cow...
 
I am building a website which deals with a fairly popular subject. When I search for the keywords that I expect my visitors to use, I see 100s of thousands of results.
 
A signature link to your site is a one way link as long as you dont link out to the Forum from your site of course, the link is not going to do you a massive deal of good, you need links from peoples sites to you from their homepage if possible, without you having to link to them.
Reciprocal links ie you link to me and I will link to you in return are out of date and not something you should bother with, but a few will be ok.

By the way, I'm just learning all these things. What php files should include these codes?
Should i put them in header.php?
 
ATTN OP'S: do not teach people the wrong way that u never used before!. For those who have use the code will get banned from google or die dry. kindly reply..
