Guest Posts are undoubtedly one of the best link-building methods out there. (Of course, a lot depends on the sites you choose.)
In a perfect world, you would get a site which is highly relevant to your niche, has great DA/DR metrics, 100k+ monthly organics, low OBL/Linked Domains, etc etc.
But in reality, most guest post opportunities are sites with some basic traffic numbers, decent DA/DR (which is usually inflated), and high outbound links (because everyone is approaching them!).
I have been using a way to maximise the power of these guest posts, and that is by choosing an underserved/low-competition keyword for the post. (Even if it has low search volume)
It's strange that most people overlook this part of guest posting. 99% of guest posts are written on 'generic' topics without any intention to getting them ranked. For example, "5 tips to keep your car engine healthy" would be a no brainer for an Automotive guest post.
This has been the rule of thumb, and we all know that article isn't going even in the top 50 (or top 100 for that matter)
But what if you published on a low-kd (think 0-5) keyword and the post actually gets ranked on page 1? (Which will be easy because the posting site would have at least some kind of basic authority)
I strongly believe that this can give you a boost of over 200% compared to your regular guest posts. That too with little additional investment!
And another benefit IMO is that this backlink will look natural AF. Google will not penalise you for being mentioned on a page that is actually getting organic traffic (and is helpful content.)
Potential drawbacks to this method:
1. Sometimes it could be difficult to search a low-KD keyword which is a cross between your niche and the guest posting site
2. When your page starts ranking, the webmaster could sell a niche edit link to someone else on that page, thereby diluting your link juice. (I've personally experienced this one)
