Nice idea OP. Be sure to check competition though (whatever keywords you're targeting, what it takes to rank), so not to waste time on too competitive searches.

^ yes, all i'm saying is that before he starts a blog about 'item+review', he should do a basic check if there's any chance of his blog to be seen by anyone. there's plenty of news announcement so there's plenty to pick from.
