Simple Manual Citation Finding Method

I have seen a few posts lately concerning local seo and ranking places properties to get in the map or 7 box. "Citations" are a common prerequisite and there are many Top XX lists shared and floating around sometimes those are not enough to go into battle and win.

I find the best way to go into battle is not just jumping in and building citations but get to know what the competition or the "enemy" has going on in their fire power.

It is always good to manually check and see for yourself even better learn to walk b4 you run. This could be done using Market Samarai and Scrapebox for those of you with tools. So for the not so experienced and or noobs that don't have any tools yet this will work for you.

To start this process I search a local search string that will trigger a map listing or blended results page. Lets use "plumber in vancouver"

Now what I am looking for here is the Phone Number for all our competitors in the listing. Jot down with pen or copy and paste into a text editor of choice.

I use Chrome & Firefox but for this type of project I use Firefox because of this slick little FREE firefox extension called seo for firefox for exporting cvs straight out of the results. SeoMoz also has a tool bar which will export cvs as well.

Once you have a tool bar set up you can search citation phone number
(xxx)xxx-xxxx. I export the top 3-5 pages depending how tough I think it would be to rank, label them individually "(xxx)xxx-xxxx Page x" in a new folder. Do this for all 7 listings.

Next I head over to majestic seo it is paid and free but the free features give us enough data to look for. Also in the image above you can click through to Majestic st8 from the serps if you choose. The thing I look for here is the Ac Rank.
Ac Rank is just a measurement Majestic uses to rank a domain by backlinks (0-15) Higher the number the better(more backlinks it has) you can read more on AC rank here if you want Majestic Glossary

Next up is to check and see how powerfull these possible citations are.
Take all the urls you gathered from our cvs exports and start plugging them into Majestic add all your ACR findings to you spread :)

LOL Now for the shitty part;) Create a spreadsheet and combine all 7 first page cvs into one. Then all page 2's and 3's etc. Go through and highlight domains which are duplicates. These duplicates are being used by multiple competitors. These are the first citations I want to acquire. You want the same powerful citations the competition have plus more!

Once you have found all the citation possibility's that are shared between all the competitors go through and sort by ac rank and start to acquire those remaining citations.

This is just a manual way to getr dun you can totally speed it up with tools if you prefer. It is manual it is a little time consuming BUT if you are wanting to get into business and charge a customer a $499 set up fee + a on going monthly maintenance fee. You are good to go making a good piece of cake with residual income that requires minimal maintenance work.

Not much on BHW about Places at the moment - that's a good primer for those starting on Places.

Have you encountered Places listings merging and Google creating dupes much? Be interested to hear how others are dealing with some of these issues.

Nice information, would you mind sharing the ScrapeBox and Market Samurai tips for discovering local citations?

in a way, its the same, citation is backlink in google places, but, citation not have to be a link back, as long as it contain your Business name, phone number and address, its already a citation

What's the difference between a "citation" and a "backlink" ?

do we need to enter our complete address on all citations? as we serve customers at their Locations and as such dont allow customers to visit our office... do we need to give our full address details ( we dont want to put our details because of amount of Spam post we get )

Yes you should provide your full address , because Google will fetch the address and update in ranking using this

Interesting. Make sure when ranking for Google places/local:

Your name address and phone number match in the citations
You create Google maps for your listing.

Skype me if you need help

The tool LinkResearchTools has one way to do just this, in one easy step for 10 competitions.

It goes even further & tells you where all these 10 competitors link out. If you can get a link there, some of their link juice flows to yours!

downside: 300$ a month best package :)

thats way too expensive for many of us...
