    Hi Guys.

This is my first share after asking questions and leeching information from the forum.

I am not sure if anyone thought of and shared this before but if he did then just ignore it, I thought of this myself.

I saw several threads where google alerts where mentioned to being traffic/links. But when I used it, I found out that most of what comes up is the web 2.0s and articles made by IMers for link building.

Anyway, here's how I think it can be used. You can create an alert with your keyword in quotes, like "how to lose weight fast" , "weight loss techniques". Afterwards, most of the emails you will receive will contain web 2.0s and articles by your competitors. When you look at the article, you will see his keywords as links and will then be able to know what he is hoping to rank for. the more articles you find the tougher the competitor is.

This is beneficial to those who are already ranking 1st or something and dont want to be suddenly second, because it would take them a minimum of days to regain their position (for G to see their new links when they linkbuild).

Also, you can using before you make a website to use it as a measure of how competitive the niche you're entering is. (Convenient for seasonal KWs where the demand will be present in the future).

I think that sums it up, hope you find it useful, thanks.

You're going to waste a lot of time looking through articles that could be better spent on doing someone productive. Being scared you're going to lose your #1 spot won't help you retain that spot.

Yea, I have to agree with BHopkins... sounds like a lot of work to go through (well, time more than work) just to find out what you could by looking at his source code, keyword density and checking his recent links in Market Samurai.

Thanks given for sharing your method though... appreciate it!

Well, it doesnt take that much time, the whole thing takes 3 mins or something every day (i tried it). Also, you dont have to do it yourself if your time is that precious, a VA can do that for you. the thing is, you cant know that stuff through Market Samurai because you wouldnt know if someone on the second page decides to buy a lot of seo services and boost his position especially in niches with low competition where you can be outranked easily.

If you're in a profitable niche, you're always building links because you always have competitors doing the same.

If you're in a micro-niche, or niche that isn't profitable, knowing your competitors is irrelevant because you're not making much money per site.

Honestly, I don't see the value in knowing who is behind me. I'm obviously better than they are and I'm going to spend my time getting better, not watching behind me.

And unfortunately sometimes gives innacurate information :(

Tracking SERP positions for specific keywords is the best option you have, better use software like Traffic Travis, SEO Power Suite, etc.
