Yea,I won't suggest doing this if your doing a lot of BH Seo.

After looking into this further, I have found sites that do not link to their Google+ profiles but still have a picture within the SERPS. Would a Google+ profile be enough? But then how is the ownership verified?

if you can sign up with community and send some advice or unique advice using own pic that condition SERP displaying results with image.

if you can use blogger, in blogger profile you can use image when visitor search your keyword, SERP display you image.

Google authorship is such a load of crap. It's just the next extremely scammable feature of Google. Anybody can create a G+ account with hundreds of connections and then hook it up to their site.

I have found it works well for CTR as to the average non-internet savvy chump it looks legit, but I haven't found that it increases SERPs at all...

You can add it like:

And put it above </head> tag and you are done.
