Alright, I basically played around with tumblr for a few days and got about 100+ followers a day because of quality.
To start, figure out how to set up a tumblr blog, im not going to go through that because there are some great guides on here that explain it. I would recommend having a clean theme, and use the infinity scroll option so people dont have to click through pages. Also, head over to SCM music player and make a good playlist if your not in the porn industry, its a nice addition. to find good music you can check out sites like vibeaddict, 8tracks etc. (im not affiliated with them). make sure you have a niche in mind and stick to it.
Once your set up, its all about the pictures. I use scrapebox but there are other image scraping tools that you can use. here is where I do things differently. I find some of the best pictures by finding blogs and tumblrs and sites that have great photos that relate to my niche. I am in the hipster niche so I would put into google something like this
this will bring up relevant pictures and then I can just use the scrapebox addon and download them all.

anything that has pictures posted to it regularly
From there, once you have the photos you can streamline the process by using tumbloadr to put all your photos into your que(this site is specifically helpful if you only want to upload it to one of your subblogs. it allows you to put tags in and these are very important.
from what I learnt, gif, smoke, tattoo, hipster, teen, wild, nature, quote, skull are all very popular right now. try and make the tags relevant to the picture. this is why it helps to upload similar pictures at the same time. its worth it to take a bit of time and separate the picture out before hand.
in the que, you have an option on how often to post, I do 48 posts ever 24 hours which means a post every half hour but you can do less.
I dont follow people back unless they ask. Once you get a good following you can use mylikes, adsense, georedirects/iframs(not sure if this is allowed but I tried it) using this, you can post up quality stuff with minimal work everyday and in a few months have a huge following. You can really bank on this if you put in the time in the beginning and watch it grow.
