So, I've been working on my offline SEO/consulting business for the last few months. I have a friend who is a marketing consultant, and passed on the SEO work for 1 client who I've spoken with 4 or 5 times so far, and I'm going to meet them on Monday - should seal the deal. This is a big client for me - 6k start up with a 4k monthly. I'm excited.

Secondly, I'm meeting with a family friend who is a lawyer tomorrow. My plan with him is the Dan Kennedy Direct Mailing Method.. I know there's another name for this method, but I forget it now.

I have already gotten his (the lawyer family friend) website to #1 organically - a month or two ago. I contacted him and told him what I did and that I'd like to meet with him to show him. I told him what I wanted in return was some business advice, a testimonial, and some references. I didn't say anything about paying me. He said sure, let's schedule the appointment and to come on by. Tomorrow at 10 AM.

I'm hoping to meet with him tomorrow and ask about the structuring of my business - he's a business lawyer. Then what I want to do is ask to send a letter from him to 100-200 of his colleagues who own their own businesses. This will be on his letterhead, his envelopes, and it will be a letter about how I helped him with his website rankings, etc. I will pay for the paper and postage, obviously.

That will then allow me to send another letter a week or two later saying, I'm the guy who your friend wrote to you about.. we're offering a free analysis for your online presences/reputation, etc.

Follow up with another letter.. followed up with another letter. This 3 letter method is what Dan Kennedy talks about. Each one getting progressively more and more urgent with the calls-to-action.

What do you guys think? Anyone have experience trying this method for offline consulting?

Yup. Like DK says, it takes 6 no's to get a yes (generally speaking).

That's why those 1-shot cold calls yield poor results.

6 no's from the same person.. or 6 people to say no to find 1 person to say yes?

    Same person.

Persistence is key. Just because the person says no, doesn't mean they reject you. Maybe they aren't ready to buy, or maybe they haven't heard what they need to hear in order to make a decision.

I'd make it clear that in lieu of asking for payment from him you'd like business advice, letters sent, etc. The attorneys I know have absolutely no problem bartering like you plan on doing. Great idea.

Your plan is really great. Being endorsed by a trusted advisor is an excellent way to launch your business. I really need to access my personal network to see if any of my friends or family know anyone like this. Any updates??

    OK - I'm back!

    Great news all around.

I got the endorsement from the Lawyer.. he printed it up on his letterhead, looked great. He's an JD, MBA, CPA.. so it was impressive.

Met with the client on Monday.. the CEO and the Head of Marketing - they gave me the go ahead. I'm working out getting an email address at their domain.. sending an invoice and I'm set!

I have about 4 clients in the pipeline that are bigger than this first one, so I'm stoked.

The only thing that didn't happen was I didn't get through the DK mailer strategy with the Lawyer. I was talking to my Dad and he said it would make him feel uncomfortable, and to focus on that later, if needed. It seems every time I open my mouth, someone knows someone who is interested in this marketing.

My plate is full right now, so I'm focusing on networking, word of mouth, etc to get clients, and it's working like a charm so far.

Great plan. I'm personally look to do the same thing for my business and using a similar Direct Mail piece.

Anyone know where best to look to learn this particular Dan Kennedy DM strategy?

Great news! Major congrats! Networking and word of mouth are the best ways to get business. Relatively cheap too!
