I have good ranking for a wide range of my keywords for my bricks and mortar site. My google places now pops up for some kw but where it does my generic listing does not. This is annoying as most of my placement is above the fold.
Last couple of weeks I have been doing a little experimentation and will share my findings.
I built a very similar (but not exact) site to my own on an aged and placed it at a EMD (2 years +) I owned my generic is not on a EMD but the places (the EMD) is on a .eu site (this was the only one I could get).
I changed the url on my places page to point to here. Bingo two or so days later I was getting two mentions on page 1 with my generic above the fold and the places in position 3 or 4. (I optimised the places listing as per the excellent advice and materials gleaned from around here!!)
Then I thought my generic converts better and I want the traffic from my places to go there.
I have placed a simple redirection script to achieve this, but think when g next crawls it it will notice the redirect compare the two urls and strike one from the serp. Anyone have any experience of this.
Have also considered using the robots.txt file to stop G crawling the site, but am worried that if they cannot crawl it then cannot verify it is still there and will drop it anyway?
Am I on to something here
