They give out free VPNs every few months.
They are clearly using personal data for expenses.

ISPs in North America have a 3 strike warning system, where they only turn over data after 3 reports. Using these vpns could let you loosely evade getting detected by your ISP.
It would require the copyright holder to make a claim to the VPN to get the user's IP, and then subpoena the user's ISP to get their contact details.
It's highly unlikely they will do this, because it requires a lot of work and legal time to do. So unless you're downloading very niche business software or something beyond casual movies/tv shows, you should be fine using it that way. It's not bulletproof, but 90% of Hollywood content is not going to come after users beyond the initial scare tactics of C&D the IP that downloaded the content.

If you are using a VPN to priate, why would you use something that logs you?
that completely defeats the purpose of hiding behind a VPN

No it doesn't. It's based on the level of anonymity you need - as I said before.
For most torrenting of tv shows/movies, simply masking your IP by using a VPN to download (regardless of whether they log) is sufficient. Because their method of policing piracy is simply to auto-email the downloader's ISP with a cease and desist. This happens automatically through vendors like Web Sheriff.
Concealing your IP, regardless of whether the VPN logs data or not, prevents your ISP from being notified.
Anyone seriously interested in anonymity beyond just concealing their IP wouldn't use a VPN.

Not nord but expressvpn, cyberghost and private internet access are all owned by the same company.
If you can pay and want to use a really trustworthy VPN, go with Mullvad or IVPN. They both are independently audited. They both are cheaper than other VPNs. They don't have any bloatware. They are not in any top VPN lists because they don't have any affiliate programs, or holiday discounts sales and they don't have any free plans or trials. You can pay with crypto (BTC, monero) as well as cash.
Malwarebytes VPN and mozilla VPN, both use Mullvad's server network for their VPN apps.
No ethical and trustworthy VPN promises total anonymity. If it does, then it is not ethical and surely not trustworthy.
