metamask wallet was hacked!!!

last night i've moved some of my SOL crypto to my metamask wallet to purchased newly launched meme coins and then within 10mins it was gone. although the loss was just 50$, it still bothers me cuz i'm not quite sure whether i keep using metamask wallet or not. i know i was totally helpless and i was fully vonurable leaving the seeds open at desktop and using metamask chrome extension which some say that i shouldn't. please share some wallet security tips to improve my protection. is there any other wallet with better protection lvl. give me all the help that i can get.

You were scammed by crypto drainers.

Hey mate, firstly sorry for your loss.

I know some people might argue with me on this saying don’t need Antivirus but, use an Antivirus like Kaspersky costs like 10 bucks for a year and use the password manager that comes free. It also gives you free vpn. Antivirus saves you from unknowingly downloading malicious files and attacks and prevents you from accessing dangerous links/phishing sites, lets you know if any of your passwords has been leaked.

Since you mentioned memecoins, most likely the page you visited to buy them was a scam page. As soon as you connected to that page with your wallet, they drained all your crypto.

You need to be really careful where you connect your MetaMask wallet to. MetaMask always gives warning notification of unknown RPC’s when you try to connect, you need to be very careful and watch when this happens.

Also never save your Mnemonic/Pvt key in emails or on your pc. Make sure it’s encrypted behind a password manager if you need to have it saved in your pc/phone. Password managers disable logging what you type on your keyboard so that hackers/scammers can’t log the password you type. For seed phrases always use on screen keyboard to type.

Always have majority of your crypto on a well reputed CEX like Binance. I always keep majority of my crypto in Binance and only move to MetaMask when I need to and that also using a new wallet everytime.

Lastly, never connect your wallet to unknown sites, especially memecoins, 90% are scams and only god knows which ones are waiting to drain your wallet the second you connect to them.
The main reasons people get scammed is visiting unknown sites and connecting their wallets without checking the RPC, voluntarily depositing their crypto in the hopes of getting unrealistic returns on staking pools, voluntarily buying presale token in the hopes of finding that next 1000x like Solana or clicking links from DM’s in discord specially from scammers acting as a mod with fake mod names.

Sorry to hear about that loss, even if it was a small amount—it still hurts. For better security, definitely avoid storing seed phrases on your desktop or any digital location. Use a hardware wallet like Ledger or Trezor for larger amounts, as they're much safer. Always double-check extensions and only download from official sources. Also, consider enabling a secure passphrase on MetaMask for an extra layer of protection.

Immediately report it to the customer support of Metamask. So they could block and lock your account, Just make sure it could still be recovered once they fix and resolve your issue.

There's nothing wrong with metamask.

I have over $100k in my metamask and have been using it for years.

You likely gave permission to some scam website to access your wallet. You need to know what legit sites are only use those. Never buy any coins directly from sites. They are scams. If you want a memecoin you find out what network it's on, then you swap. If it's on solana, you get some sol, then you swap on jup.ag.

You can just go to coinmarketcap.com to find the dex's.

If you go to https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/avalanche/ and click dex, you can see you have pancakeswap v3 and v2 and dexalot with higher daily volumes and liquidity scores.

If you want the url for dexalot, click on it and get it from coinmarketcap. Don't google search it.

If your coin is on eth, you go to

https://coinmarketcap.com/currencies/ethereum/ click on dex's and you can see you have curve, pancakeswap, dexalot, degate, uniswap..

Sort by liquidity score to get the best ones.

And never, ever, ever share your wallet with random sites. You are essentially giving them unrestricted access to your bank account when you do this.

And install walletguard.app

You have to connect your wallet obviously. Don't connect your wallet to random sites people tell you to on forums.

Don't even trust me here. I *could* have had my account hacked. You never know. Never assume.

Take that url and research it. Check reddit and other sources and make sure you're happy it's a legit service before you connect your wallet. Make this a habit for everything.

Depends how much money you have, but people get caught with this all the time. Today's reputable exchange is tomorrow's casualty.

I mean just look at what happened after the last bull..

Genesis, ftx, blockfi, celsius, voyager, gemini..

The only things that are pretty much 100% safe are bitcoin, etfs with major financial institutions. Binance could go under. It's not an old institution like blackrock or vanguard.

Crypto should be stored in a cold wallet when not being actively traded.

How can one see that information is system is locked ?

Always have majority of your crypto on a well reputed CEX like BNC . I always keep majority of my crypto in Binance and only move to MetaMask when I need to and that also using a new wallet everytime.

I am sorry for your loss, you have allowed one of the scam apps, I have been in this business for a long time, but this situation happens by giving permission or falling into the trap of scammers.
