Metadata is the hidden information stored within files like images, documents, and videos. Many people forget that these data can reveal critical details about their identity or location. Ignoring this can lead to serious consequences.

What is Metadata?

Metadata is data about data. It includes information like file creation date, device model, GPS coordinates, and even the username of the person who created the file. For example, a photo taken with your smartphone may contain the exact location and time it was captured.

Real-Life Story

A friend of mine once got into a tricky situation. He decided to apply for a credit card and scanned his bank statement to submit it online. Unfortunately, he forgot to check the metadata in the PDF file. Later, he found out that the metadata included his full name, scanner model, document creation date, and even the GPS location of his home office. This was more than enough to identify him.

How to Protect Yourself?

  • Clean Metadata Before Uploading Files – Use special utilities or file editor features to remove metadata before sending documents.
  • Use Secure File Formats – Some file formats, like PNG and PDF, contain less metadata compared to JPEG or DOCX.
  • Use Anonymous Accounts – Avoid using your primary email or account when sending sensitive files.
  • Check Files Before Uploading – Open the file properties or use online tools to verify and clean metadata before uploading.
