MeetUp.com money maker?

I recently discovered MeetUp.com and it seems to be an amazing resource! There are many nearby business networking groups that allow you to get your name out there and help you get referrals for your business. I believe some groups even charge per meeting so from that POV you could make a killing not only selling yourself, and your product/service, but also on setting up a group yourself. Has anyone had success in using this site themselves?

I would like to learn more about this as well. Did anyone here go to those meetup.com events and successfully picked up a few clients?

Yes. I did tried meetup. I posted an 1 hour free workshop on how mobile web/app can increase ROI for local business. Around 30+ signed up and only 12 turned up. Only 1 sale was made that day, and another 3 more contracts signed after a follow up of email sent. Result consider not bad, but due to lack of manpower and time, I did not regularly promoting this workshop. But I believe it is a great and low cost way of promoting your business/products in local area.

Thx for the great share, can you tell us a little more on how you setup your meetup?

ie: So you just randomly find a place to meet? who are the people who signed-up? how long was the meet etc. thx

It is a great networking resource, especially if you are in a large city.

I will target the same interests group. For mine, I linked up those who are interested in social internet marketing, seo company, website designers, online marketing personal. Targeted them as I would like to have them as my referral whereby they could earned commission by introducing clients of theirs to me. The place was a small meeting office which was rented to me free of a friend of mine, with projector to show my slides. It was a 1 hr presentation with Q&A after that.
