McAffee AV Tyranny

I've been using this subscription service since 2003 and I'm damned tired of it. Big pain in the ass because it does not allow scheduling of anything ahead of time; only cancellations or immediate scans. Currently it seems to think that starting a scan at 9am EST is a convenient time.

It expands processing to absorb all resources, including those used by whatever sw I'm using to get some work done ... whether it's scanning or downloading the bazillions of updates. Oh, and when it's downloading an update, there is no interruption or cancellation possible, apart from shutting down the app or machine itself. Criky. Both of my Windows machines are slowed to a crawl whenever it's doing anything.

Granted, It's been very good at capturing virii & trojans during this time. I've had only 1 trojan slip through in the past 5 years.

Initially, I installed it because it was required in order for me to use one of my client's VPNs back in 2003 and I've held onto it due to inertia. But I think I've had enough.

Lately I've been tempted to shut its processes down in the task manager when it takes over with an update when I'm trying to get something done.

So, any good recommendations?

Tropheum recommended to me the following combo for decent security the other day:
malwarebytes
antimalware
kaspersky - AV + Internet Security

I'm pretty tired of McAfee. "Slow" is a very loose term for it these days.

I've used Malwarebytes and AntiMalWare for the one infection I did have. For ongoing protection Kaspersky does seem to get the nod, as does Node32.

Eset nod32 is awesome. Very small and isn't a resource hog like symantec products.

I'm running it and malware bytes.

Some say that kaspersky and super anti spyware pro is a combo that cannot be beat......

McAfee is not even that good of an AV software. The best one in the market right now by far is Kaspersky of course.

I use kaspersky Internet Security and I do not have any problem.

Thanks Aliskorn. I'll be ridding myself of the scourge of McAfee very soon.

McAfee works very well, but has become such a total pain that it interferes with my work.

The thing with norton is that it's bloated and will go out of it's way to irritate you. I have a D drive full of software with cracks and keygens. Norton went apeshit when it tried to scan it. If you need blanket coverage and don't have anything pirated on your PC then it's great.

I haven't used Norton in years. I loved it until the late 90s for Mac utilities, but I've heard mostly negative reviews on its AV performance. HelloAll, you're not experiencing any slow performance with it?

I'm going to take a trial of Nod32. Thanks for the help on that belexandor.

Norton 2009 is supposed to be a LOT faster than its predecessors. I'm gonna give it a shot when my Kaspersky subscription runs out as I've heard great things about it.

In the meantime, you can always use Commodo, it's basic but it's free and will get the job done.

Norton might be faster but quite not as good as KAV when it comes to detecting.
