I know I can only have 3 adsense ads per page but can I have other ads (hostgator) on the same page to total to 4 or 5?

I'm afraid you are not going to get a detailed answer to your question because this doesn't exist. There's clear consensus on 3 adsense ads per page (more if you're a premium publisher) but not easy guidelines on how to combine G00gle's program with those from other companies.

How many ads are advisable to be safe closely relates to G00gle's concepts of "made for Adsense" and "quality content". What are those? Really nothing I presume; just abstract, general principles highly dependent on the particular strictness and professionalism of each manual reviewer working for big G.

Of course someone here can tell you "I match 3 adsense +2 banners from locals I sold myself. For the time being, no problem with G00gle".

What we will never know is whether his website goes fine just because hasn't been manually reviewed to the moment or 'cause was reviewed by Peter (who's fed up with his job and wants to f*** Google) and that of yours will be examined by Ron (who's a bitter guy and loves to f*** 10 webmasters a day).

So, depending on how many Adsense accounts you can get, drive carefully or speed up. As with new algorithm, all of us must drive blindly and should assume this before making our own bets.

Yes, you can use 3 adsense ads and other ads on same page as well. I also have been used hostgator banner for my blog (but now removed as I was not getting any profit by placing this banner).

Recently, Google changed its algorithm and now they observing sites which have more ads and comparing with content placed on there. If your sites have more ads then it can put negative impact so don't go for more ads. Using 2 adsense ads and one hostgator banner will be right decision.
