I don't get why all of you hate Matt Cutts. Personally I see him as a cog in the machine that just espouses company policy.
This is no different than you telling your employees what to say, and not to say, to your customers.
As far as I know, we are the ones giving Google the headache, or Matt wouldn't have a job.
We are the bad guy's here, he is the sheriff.

The golden rule (as learned from experience) don't use blackhat methods on sites you can't afford to lose.
the whole point of SEO is to find a niche that has enough profit in it to enable you to build and rank sites over and over again if and when they get hit. IMHO.

Sitting here in the rain listening to Norah Jones, I thought to myself;
The perfect analogy for Matt Cutts and his 'mission' is the director of whatever agency in the US is responsible for the 'war on drugs'... you seize 1kg at the border, or indeed possibly 1 tonne, and you just KNOW that there is at least another 1,400 tonnes that got through that day, and it haunts your dreams each night...
Same as Cutts - he devalues 100 spam links, and 10,000 more go online and start flowing link-juice before he's finished recording his next propaganda video.
Not to mention the resentment he feels that's caused by his deep and dark knowledge that his higher-ups in the organization are actually benefiting from the stuff he's trying to stop each day (ie, forcing anyone who is unfortunate enough not to be blackhat to buy links from G), and it all makes for a deeply unsettled and disturbed state of mind - a state of mind that leads to the types of passive aggressive attacks we saw on Gorang... you need an outlet somewhere, right?
Cutts, I'm pleased that you're so insecure about your results that you feel the need to vent with passive aggression towards Gorang et al. It reveals your hand.

Great post there! And if the analogy with the war on drugs holds, then there's an additional ingredient: corrupt government officials who are totally in the anti-drug war just to keep the drug flowing.... They don't want to end drugs, they're a great market. Maybe google doesn't wanna end spam.....maybe some of their employees are in the biz....

Maybe ?! You must know the saying "power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely" so I think there's no "maybe" involved...
Google employees have a bot that flags spam so when a flag is triggered they go and check out the link profile and see where the links are coming from... It's the most simple explanation to why a lot of PUBLIC spam networks are still indexed and to why a lot of PUBLIC services here still work
Take guest blogging for example... I'm guessing the webspam team, with a budget that outweighs that of several third world countries, can pretty much just buy some services, get reports and deindex sites based on the reports... how is that so complicated ?
But once you remove all spam what is a team that's called 'webspam' going to do ?
And where is the guy in charge of that team going to work?

It's possible that they not only may be in the biz, but that the 'spammers' who take out the top rankings and knock off 'legitimate companies' forcing them to Adwords in doing so actually create a significant portion of G's ad revenue... hence, as you suggest, the massive self-interest that hides behind the public masquerade of the war on {spam|drugs|terror|illegal immigrants|any other war} is alive and well.
Those same advertisers possibly then put pressure, to the extent that they can, on G to 'fight spam', and G does it's best to assuage their concerns; hence, a full time Director of Propaganda is engaged to appear to fight the good fight.
If I had read this post of mine a few months ago, I would have put it in the tin-foil-hat bin. But after seeing Cutts' response to Gorang, he's just given the game away entirely.
I say this RE Cutts - If you were so supremely confident in your ability to do your job, you wouldn't give two shits about Gorang, nor indeed Anglo, nor Backlinks.com, nor any other bastard.
Just like me - when I'm black-hatting my way to #1, I don't give two shits about the quasi-competitors who rely on 'generating unique and valuable content' as a ranking strategy.
