There are people equally qualified to do Matts job, does not matter if he returns or not it will have very little effect. We will just have to send hate mail and talk about hating someone else instead of him.
 
I wonder whether he is on leave as part of Google trying to stop sharing so much info about their ranking tactics (in the same way they are going to stop publishing pagerank.?
 
he maybe on leave from office, but i am sure he will be working remotely from his Hawaii condo.

I think that if he stays away so long there is something we don't know coming soon. Probably Google will be ready with new scaring revolution. I think we will regret the days when he was present.

matt is rich enough to quit his salary from google, he must be a shareholder at the moment and its one of the lucky man to truly know how to rank #1 for a 500k/month keywords.

Actually we all shall be worry about him leaving the scene, all of matt has done to us is give inside of what to do, all you needed to do is reverse psychology what he said and apply to your strategic. Now that he's gone everything will be harder as the uncertainty will be bigger. Matts at his deep inside is a true black hatter supporters !

I do not think that there are that many people that Google has obtained from the NSA that are of the caliber that Cutts is. However, not all talented programmers and software engineers work at the NSA.

Cutts was really no more than a figurehead and a team manager.
