Disavow won't work by itself. I have personally tried disavowing links for months in an attempt to remove a penalty for a friends site. It wasnt until we removed the links, or tried to, before a disavow was approved.

If you dont care about the site then dump it, but youll disavow your brains out and not get anywhere.

I also had a client get hit with 500,000 links. I got rid of the bad ones in under a week and sent reconsideration req. He is now ranking number one for the keywords. Also consider his top keyword gets 450,000 searches a month.
