Hi,

I have currently 12k comments awaiting my approval. I guess everyone of them is spam. I could delete them all at once.

But what if some of them are real comments? How can I know that? Do you have any suggestions? How do you cope with this problem?

Thanks and best regards

That's huge number to deal with good luck with it .
If it's wordpress, i hope you enabled akismet it will filter the spams most accurately. You can also check the IP address of the comments.
If it's not important just delete all. Don't waste time.

Yes, you should not have to go through that manually. Chances are the vast majority of them are spam, however, you shuold have installed and activated Akismet if you are using Wordpress, or any other spam filter, then you wouldn't have this problem.

Very much agree with the comments posted above, and that bulk comments sure are big. good luck on you

Can't you set up a captcha and eliminate the spam traffic or the spam will go around the captcha?

I think you should just delete all those comments altogether, as I have a hint that 95-99% of those are spam comments anyway.
So just delete those comments from your blog, and then install recaptcha and use that as a requirement when submitting comment (you should also put that at the wp login page as well, for security purposes), and that recaptcha would prevent 99% of spam comments from entering your blog.
Thus, the 1% that goes through, should be legit comment to begin with, thus, that saves you the time to vet these comments in the process.
Don't use the simple captcha, as it is easily broken and useless.

Is it even worth vetting through all the comments?

Real comments usually don't have any links. Neither in the Commenter's section nor the comment itself.

So just name, email and IP.

3 lines with avatar. Spammer's comment will be 4 lines (3 +URL)

What I do is display 999 comments on a single page in WordPress. Then quickly scroll through them and look for a "thin" one with only 3 lines.

Thanks, the idea with recaptcha seems to make sense.

But going through all the comments manually.... Phew, too difficult imo.

I'd just delete them all since many times the comments are too well spun you might actually mistake it for real comments.
