Well i tend to go for manual posting because i pay more attention and leave no kind of footprints behind, so it has a bigger impact. The rest of things such as analyzing and the rest of research/scraping is done auto with some tools.
If you can apply the same thing to automated, to leave no footprints than i don't really see why you shouldn't use it for posting.

Depends on the website.
Generally speaking, Manual 1st tiers, Automatic 2nd, 3rd tiers.

I also take care of basic on-site stuff on 1st tiers but I don't bother with that on 2nd tier links and higher. The quality of my links on 1st tier and are also managed with care and I take great pains in choosing where to get them and where to point them. 3rd tiers are garbage links done in tens of thousands but I believe they do help a little.

Just like jackmitch stated above, Build the first tier links manually and run automation tools for second and third tiers. It's safe to have the first tier links built with hands, because if there's any mistake happens at the time of setting up the automation tool, it'll spoil your linkbuilding process and will end up in more 404 errors.

Automated doesn't necessarily have to mean low quality. If you build the automation yourself instead of 100% relying on pre-made scripts (by using zennoposter, ubot, imacros or using programming languages), there is literally no difference between manual and automated.

Most of my SEO work is automated but more effort is put into tier 1 links, so content is unique, well spun etc.
Tier 2 and 3 are just made on the fly with tools, obviously not complete gibberish/spam. I also do some manual work for each site such as social signals and stuff like squidoo that are harder to automate but still provide good value for your SEO.

As above some members, Better To have Ist Tier Links done Manually
while IInd Tier can be done on automation but handle with care and
for IIrd Tier just have a blast automated task over such links.
So as to be safe and cover for any risk of getting G penalty.

Agreed. There are ways to build decent quality links automatically. Some tools let you do this. You just have to take the time to learn how to use them. Make a few yourself automatically and review it. If it passes your standards then fire away. Anybody here think GSA is one of those tools?

Manual will always and Forever win.. win, win and more win.
Automatic will always have issues like any AI it'll never be perfect and can never account for human & natural activity.. Manual also allows for Relevant Niche targeting, which most Automatic softwares won't - Tier 1 should be manual, tier 2 & 3 automatic..

GSA is great but it still has issues - For some reason it was building me South Korean links to a UK based site - I have however had excellent results with it, it just tends to bug out randomly on some projects/keywords.
For example:
SEO is also a Korean name, so it builds links when your using that keyword to find target sites to korean websites, so you have to do the full or EM keyword.
