We can always make it greyhat by scraping and doing speedy backlinking, but the real question is quality or some compromise between quality and quantity?

What about redirects?

They are the same. What matters more is their content, indexing status.
 
quality more than quantity. When you care about it you always build quality backlinks to your website. Why spam it to death?

Always quality links are best than quantity. Having a lot of links is risky, especially if you aren’t acquiring them naturally. This is why it’s best to focus on quality than quantity.
 
Of course it's quality over quantity on any day for ranking. Also, when you use automated solutions to build links, there are another 100k SEOs who can also get all those link sources quite easily. That also means those sources are going to be spammed heavily and will be useless, if not they're already.
 
Search Engines recommend quality always doesn't matter quantity backlinks.
Quality is must but quantity is also mattered for your site ranking.when you have too much quality backlink then it more beneficial for ranking.

So semi-automated? or straight whitehat?
 
I'd say that depends on the site. If I am providing an external service for a site that is already performing well, I'd avoid some black hat tactics. But if it is a new site, and the owner wants revenue as soon as possible, I'd go for it. For my own sites, I am using every technique out there :)
 
Manual linkbuilding will work, don't go for automated spam backlinks.. We can use automated backlinks for tire 2 link building

However, if you have enough money to invest in your website, I would say, “ Guest posts and High authority sites are the best way to build quality links.”
 
You need both automatic and manual backlinking method to drive quality and good traffic
