Manual Backlinking and Keywords

so i started my first website recently and I have a few question about backlinking and just the website keywords in general

1) So I have NO money to spend on this site so far, so I did some researching on backlinking. I learned that you want high ranking backlinks such as PR1 (or would PR7 be better?) and to my understanding I can create manual backlinks if I have no money to spend, and want quality backlinks. So do I search for my keyword and then post my link in an informative way (not spam) on blogs where I can make posts, and the higher ranked that blog is on google the better the backlink is?
Or do I just search something related to my blog For example m keyword might be iphone information. Could I just search Iphone and post links on blogs about iphones even if my keyword is iphone information?

2) Which leads me to my next question if I have a keyword such as iphone information and I get the first ranking on google, can I then change the keyword to just iphone, and try to get on first page for the iphone keyword? I know it would be very hard but it would be worth it. And If I were to eventually get first page for that I was thinkingg I could sell the product my website is about(iphone, I know i cant sell Iphones I used them as an example of a popular product.)

I hope this all makes sense The second qustion really isnt a question more of an idea...

But yeah I hope someone can understand this and can help me.

First i appreciate your intention to start a site. By the way welcome to BHW.

1)Having links in PR7 has higher value than PR1. But Having links in PR1 or PR0 is good too. ( .edu and .gov sites have higher value than .com's, .net, etc)
2)Placing links in blog's related to your keyword is what you need. SE's give your site more value if all your BL ( BackLinks) from site related to your keyword. Having BL from sites which is not related to your keyword wont affect your SE ranking , it also gives you a +.
3)If your keyword is "iPhone information" try getting BL from that keyword blog's. If you get only few blogs for your BL. Then go for the keyword "iphone" drop your BL there. There is no other go. For easy understanding - Just imagine SE will add your site in to there directory list by recognizing your Metatag, keyword density, H1, BL.
4) How can you change keyword? By editing all your content? By editing all your backlinks? lol
NO. IF you ranked good for the keyword "iPhone information" what ever you do you can't rank good for your changed keyword "iphone" without doing any SEO for your changed keyword. But you can have many keywords to rank for. ie) you can have "iPhone information" and "iPhone" as keyword. While dropping your links for BL include both keywords there. Depends on the competition you can see the results of the individual keyword.

Just to help you out. To find blogs related to your keyword which accepts links follow these steps.

Go to google.com/sitesearch
Type in .edu (.com or .org) on the field for 'Enter a site URL:
In Query type "'notify me of follow-up comments via KEYWORD*"
You get many sites where you can drop your links.
Don't do only BL, do directory submission, Web 2.0, profile backlincks, etc..

ok thanks so much for all that help man. And is it fine if I do manual backlinks, I mean it would take longer, but in approximation since I am doing manual backlinks, they will be high quality so how many of those do you think I will need to get a good rank on google?

It depends on your competitor. Open google search for your keyword. Open yahoo site explorer siteexplorer.search.yahoo[dot]com in 'Explore URL' enter your competitor URL one by one taken from the google search. See how many backlinks they have.
Ranking not only determined by number of backlinks you have. Search engines determine it by number of ways - quality content, on site SEO, etc.,

just a few more simple questions and then i think i will know almost all i need to know about backlinks.

How do I manually get .gov and .edu backlinks? Search for .gov and .edu website pertaining to my keyword, and then hope they have a comment section on their site? Or do I just post on any .gov or .edu site where it gives the option for one to post(<-- is that even possible?)

Lastly what is PR7 and PR6 and so on, what does the PR7 stand for ? I though it was pagerank, but wouldnt you want PR1 backlinks then?

I know I am sounding kind of noobie, but I am just trying to learn the basics and start up a website.

I have experienced exactly what you are saying... I have a site let's call it "how to play tennis in college" right out of the gate I ranked on page 1 for how to play tennis in college. Now 2 months later the site floats between the top of page 2 and the bottom of page 1 for the more general and much tougher phrase "how to play tennis". The site only has 80 backlinks but most of those are from other sites that talk about tennis or cover sports in general. The traffic is not too high, about 30-40 visits p day but can be built on. I also suggest starting a twitter account and facebook page for your site. Word on the street is social links matter more than ever nowadays.

As for pr the higher the pr the better..its considered an authority site..the better the rank the more authority. So say your site is about I phones and a cell phone store owner mentions your site that's good authority. Had steve Jobs mentioned your site before his passing that's great authority! See the difference? Anyway I am not sure the google math on this but some have said one pr1 link is worth 10 pr 0 links and each increase in pr is valued around 10x's more than the pr below them. That is just hearsay but you get the idea.

okay yes i do get the general idea, and i did some searching up on .gov backlinks and i think i know how to get them..

but it will all have to be manual until i get enough money for some software. (i have plenty enough money for it i just dont want to spend it on this and then i really wouldnt have anything to build up to i guess.)
