How many cash machines have you seen with the posibility to plug in a USB cable?, the virus started in mexico and then diferent versions reached europe but I dont think they are many ATMs with friendly USBs waiting to be pluged in

First of all.. how the hell would you get the key of the ATM to get inside and plug in your phone or keyboard
This is perhaps simpler than you realize. I believe ATMs typically have a metal plate over the area where technicians can plug into the machine via USB. This plate is easily removed or otherwise penetrated allowing the thieves to connect via USB.

They have to open a panel on the machine to get access to the USB port.
This method is faster than there old method and it allows them to use money mules.

I do network connectivity for ATM's and the ones I work on have one hell of a set of "panels". Those things are tough, and without a key, you are not going to pop open with a crowbar, not even a wrecking bar.
I saw a survelilience videeo where an ATM took 4 hits from a dump truck trying to smash it to pieces, and it didn't pop a seam, but the guy had to leave his dump truck. We had to replace it, but no one got any money out of it.
To ever do this, you would need the right set of keys, and the right security clearance and codes just to get the thing open enough to access the computer. The second that section opens alarms start going off, and you have to be talking on the phone to the right person at the right time with the right words, or the police will join you very quickly.
If you have all that, you probably have the keys to the safe as well.
