I was one of those starters!!All you need is a good plan to follow.To make a steady income from blogspot site,you may need more than 1 site to earn some decent amount per day.I made a post few months ago on how I did it.I did't used multiple blogs.I used Fiverr to initialize the things.Check out this thread-

You can't use blogger or any other sub domain if you want to scale up your business.If you want to continue as a full time blogger (many people are) then you may not necessarily buy a domain.But if you want to get into IM,then you have to buy domain hosting etc.
