I'm not sure how much money there would be in an article site really - particularly if you were making all your money from adsense.
If I had the time to proof read that many articles I would take one of the article site scripts and change it into a PR hub as these make big $$$ and duplicate content isn't such a problem.
Personally I would avoid a general article directory though - too many problems with duplicate content as people have pointed out, if someone submits to you and also to say ezinearticles then ezine will get to rank for the article while you'll probably end up in the supplemental index.
If you're committed to an article directory however I would aim for a specific one - i.e. seo, travel, health etc - something big but specific. I would also make it a magazine that accepts contributions so it actually looks nice and appealing to readers - but market it to webmasters as a place to get links so you get the content.
Maybe to get around the duplicate content issue you could set up a script to automatically re-write the articles - don't know how good they would turn out, but from a webmaster's point of view it could be worth submitting to.
