Making money off copyrighted material?

If you have a lot of copyrighted materials (photos for example) on your website and making money off them... Perhaps not selling them directly, but you have ads alongside them

can you ever get in trouble? What is the worse that can happen?

Of course you will get in trouble, maybe not today or tomorrow but eventually.

The worst that can happen is for them to sue you for every cent you have and make your life hell!
 
Most likely you will get a DMCA request or a C&D to remove the content. Many hosts will shut your site down until you comply. If you do not comply it is possible a lawsuit will follow.

How about if you don't actually sell copyright products but you advertise as if you do, then affiliate link the customers ? . . . Anyone know the law on that?

You can't survive that business even if you are a big player. Just think what happened to KimDotCom. If he can get in trouble, then you should better avoid even thinking about it ;)

Why not try using non copyrighted material? Depending on the license of the content, in some cases you can use it freely with attribution, or can request usage of the photo.

What Methodic1 mentioned is what most likely will happen. DMCA request to you and/or your host followed by a lawsuit. Best to go the correct route the first time around, or those stock photo sites will slap you with multi-thousand dollar fines for a single image.

I was hoping to to something centered around celebrities, but looks like I am screwed.

Can I still embed youtube videos? What if it's from an official channel?

I'm not a lawyer but in that situation you're not hosting the copyrighted material. If the owner has an issue they would disable the embed feature.

In that case, you're promoting YouTube. If the YouTube is violating copyright, then that takedown notice will be sent to them and not you.
 
If you have a permission from the owner, then you're safe. However, if not, then it's time to remove every piece of copyrighted material in your page.
