Making money from popular current court trials

Could a website that was dedicated to a specific trial be profitable? if it was an extremely popular case that was all over the news everyday (popular like the OJ or Casey Anthony trial). If so, what would be the best way monetize it?? I would update it daily with all the info on whats going on. My wife writes for several websites for a living, and is very good at it, so she would handle all the content. I also thought of having a forum for people to discuss whats going on and voice opinions. The main problem that I thought of would be that if it was so popular, all the biggest news sites would be putting up articles everyday and my site would be so far behind in google ranking that no one would see it. Would putting links or reposting those news articles be a good idea? I'm a newb to all this but would love it if this angle could work. Thanks!!

If your wife writes that good, and you are knowing your SEO site building ropes, why you are not going after profitable niches, where is already market present.

You are trying to build an oasis in a desert. Your time (wife's mostly) will be better spent in other niches. Court trials are not long term, and not easily monetizable.

That forum will die when the trial is over and it's all a short term project not worth any time wasted on it. But these topics can be hot if you already have a niche news site where that trial will be part of it not everything about it.
