Making money from music?

Hi,

Im an 18 year old student studying at college. I am looking to make a bit of extra cash doing the thing I love.

I am a good house music (dance music) producer, I am signed to labels. I am also a good DJ however I cannot seem to get gigs.

I was just wondering if anyone has any ideas how I could make a bit of money from these talents. I am not bothered whether it is online or offline but I do not have much money to invest.

Any help will be appreciated.

maybe you will send your demo to dj's whose have the online radio show ?? They are always searching for new talents eg Sean Tyas ... I think so if they will like your stuff you get some profit

u gotta network, start at ground level...go to the local colleges and see who's throwing events that u can DJ for, u might even have to do some for free just to get your name out there, but once u build a network..u will start to get referrals from others then life becomes easy.

Try getting gigs in your local neighbourhood... try local online marketing by researching the market... maybe you can go dj for weddings and stuff...

SoundCloud has a great community on their forums to get your music out there and network. You can use MS and FB to get out there as well and you can sell pre-made beats to people for a little cash flow.

In addition to sending demos, you might try the self-publishing route and create your own videos of your songs/mixes, then put up a youtube channel and myspace page to promote them. Use WH and BH methods to create page views for your channel, then use the networking from the social media to make the connections you need.

It's also helpful to read up on the bios of some successful recording artists and songwriters to find out what the current path to success actually is, from real world examples. Do a self-eval of your strengths and weaknesses---how marketable are you to the industry, from several points of view? Are there things you can add to make you more valuable? Should you strive to be a background employee, or the star, or a producer (as you are currently)?

A friend of mine had a biz as a gospel music manager, and explained that one issue in the music industry is the desire to push talent who are the "total package"---talented, AND sexy, AND who can appeal to all local markets, etc. If you are not near that level of versatility, and want to be a star, you may run into that all-or-nothing mentality and have trouble making it. But you can succeed more easily as a behind the scenes boss-producer, so I would suggest you continue on that path and use online tricks to further promote yourself, as described above.

Create flyers and pass them around. Look in the offline forum for ideas.

Get ranked #1 for "dj [city name]" and related terms. Check out seo related forums.

So basically what I'm saying is just read around the forum with those 2 goals in mind and you will be able to develop your own ideas.
