a friend asked me to do a site for their offline business, what's a good template site for that? (i don't mind paying a few pounds) or should i go with a wordpress theme instead?

wordpress is your best bet. easy to manage, easy on the eyes, lots of themes to choose from. you'll easily wow your client with it.
