Hello to all!
I am writing today with a question that has been bothering me for some time now: How to make a website for multiple locations (cities / areas). If it was international, that would've been easy, but all the cities are in one country and they are not some massive places like New York / LA. We are talking about smaller locations and even though they are in different zones, people don't have a different buyers intention.
So we have a website that targets two cities at the moment, but in time we will add more. There are a few option we came up with:
1. Make the site with a folder structure - site.com/city/sub-pages. This works with other websites, but it's a huge investment. Means each city folder will have similar sub-pages, because we offer the same things on each market (with small differences). So we would have similar pages, just in different folders. It will rank, but Google might decide it's spammy.
2. Subdomains. Each city will be on a different subdomain. This will work on some levels, because it will be great for ranking, Google won't consider it as spammy, but as we all know, subdomains are worked as separate websites. Even with the best internal linking from the main domain to the subs, it won't be as effective in ranking as folders would be. Plus, it's double the work - everything we do for one sub, have to be done to the others. Still, good for approaching local websites and bloggers.
None of the options completely satisfies what we really want. They have plus sides, but also - big flaws.
Any suggestions?
