make Twitter trending

Curious about this as well, trending isn't easy. Maybe some luck plays into it.

Wouldn't Twitter's system detect this though? Doubt bots would make enough of an impact without normal users interacting as well.

Yea, the bots are needed to get the ball rolling until some organic engagement gets involved.
It's an election year where I'm from, and from the very beginning of the year there's been an ongoing botted hashtag campaign on twitter attacking the leading candidate/party.
How can we tell it's a hashtag campaign initiated by bots and not an organic trend? The hashtags include obvious spelling errors and are titled:
#misspelledhashtag1 #misspelledhashtag2 #misspelledhashtag3 #misspelledhashtag4 .... #misspelledhashtag20 #misspelledhashtag21
Yes, the numbers are included in the actual hashtags which makes it obvious that they are bot initiated. LOL
I've counted up to 21 botted hashtag campaigns, but it's probably at a higher number by now. LOL
I'm not 100% sure, but I guess as long as there is a moderate amount of organic engagement one could get a hashtag to trend at least locally. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

That's actually hilarious, sad how Twitter doesn't take action on it - esp when it comes to something as serious as elections. People that aren't that technical don't understand that it's not real. Thank you for the explanation!

I don't know if it's just me that i see this or it's general, but i notice that the bots are always suporting few people and make fun or atacks the other side, it's happening for usa and also for some wars that are going on, and if you search one country you will see bots that say this country is doing great, showing different videos, pics, etc..
And if you search the other country, most of the content it looks like it's made by bots But is negative about that country..
And people that don't undersntang what's going on are taking the bait.
