Probably #1 key is advertising. There also the way of making people go through offers to get to the download like some other free hosting websites. Also you can put a limit on how much space they can upload and have a premium account that will give them more space for a certain amount of money each month. Think out of the box! never hurts

Put a limit on file size and charge a monthly fee for files over a certain size.

= Profit.

The major sites such as imgur make money on subscriptions. Be warned, this is a huge niche to even start in. I made the mistake of creating a site along PHPacademy, and launching it. It only lasted 1 day.

Ouch, thats suck.. Subscription sites are so attractive, sometimes..

I would go with file limits and premium access too. The content however will be questionable by those members so best to host it in a nice offshore server. DMCA issues will arise, but these are the profitable driving forces behind this type of service..

Also, don't forget that you will need a huge bandwidth and disk-space. Images are huge around the internet. The views will flow in, and the cash will flow out. I wish you the best, OP!

I wouldn't put adsense on a site like file sharing, people might load copyrighted material or nsfw images and you might be banned. I would suggest like many other big companies are doing pop up ads and premium membership and donations
