Major Issue with Google SERPS

Hi everyone, I'm looking for a bit of advice really.

I've started a micro niche site hoping to grow it to an authority site. At the moment it's just a hobby but would of course be good to earn from it.

The problem is, Google just TANKS my rankings. My posts get indexed pretty fast, usually to a good position, around the top 100 which is fine by me as I can always improve that. However after a day or two I'll see the rankings plummet; I had one page go from 72 one night, to 243 the next morning (6 hours later) and then by the end of the day couldn't be found. I was hoping that they would eventually come back but they don't appear to be doing so.

I'm targeting low competition keywords, unique content written by me, I'm posting regularly, no real affiliate marketing or adsense has been applied yet. I just don't know what the problem is, there's nothing in webmaster tools saying I have a penalty, and my site and posts appear if i do site:mywebsite.com

I'm really just looking for a bit of help or advice as I've never experienced this before. The only thing I can think of is the domain I have is expired, but I checked its backlink profile and history, couldn't see anything that would be bad.

Are you building new backlinks or promoting otherwise? Sounds like you just aren't ranking for your keywords.

Could be a couple things, could be google dance which makes your keyword ranking volatile. Or your site might suck enough that google doesn't think you deserve ranking. If the niche is actually low comp, and you make a good article, you should already rank somewhere in the top 100 or so, even with no backlinks.

This was my thought, and it seemed like I was right when my initial rankings came in. I'd expect a bit of movement of course, but it seemed a little odd that they dropped completely off. Maybe I just need to leave it more time, start building backlinks a bit. The niche itself isn't low comp, but I'm cleaning up all the low search volume, low competition long tail keywords.
The thing is, my bing rankings seem to be sticking where they are, so it seems like it's google specific.

I had the same issues, Google ranking is much more unpredictable than Bing especially for new sites.
Just keep posting good and lengthy quality content regularly, make sure they are indexed and wait for some time.
Once they start to pick up you may want to start building quality links to those posts to help boost the rankings.

Thanks, that's what I was hoping. I posted an article today that went straight in at 33, but i know it's not going to stick!

A quick question for everyone, can anyone recommend a good serp tracker? currently i'm trialling serpbook, accuranker, and proranktracker. I think i prefer proranktracker at the moment, with accuranker coming in close behind

How are you indexing your sites and backlinks to the pages not sticking?

I'm not building any backlinks yet, I'd rather see some good results with on-site SEO first then structure backlinks then. and I'm indexing by submitting the sitemap after each post, and asking google to fetch the relevant post and index it. Doing the same with bing

try out serpchimp, its free for like 14 days or something

That might be why. From what I've seen and tested, force indexing (someone correct me if I'm wrong) only works with ranking extremely low competitive keywords unless you have a well known, established site.

You should at least be building backlinks to your homepage to improve your website's authority. How often do you post new links? Do you have social media accounts on FB and Twitter for this website?

You should be building links to your pages, yes. Home page, blog posts and otherwise. But having said that you also need to focus on building the right content. Google loves content. Make sure you have 800+ words per blog post if possible, an absolute minimum of like 500-600 these days. Google really cracks down. Videos, images, etc help.

Just an update for anyone who might be reading this with similar problems.
1. my content is from 200 words for daily updates to 1300 words for articles, so I'm not too worried about how google sees that.
2. I created some social sites linking to my homepage and started sharing a couple posts. The posts i've shared have entered googles rankings, so i think thats the way to go.
3. I intentionally didnt post some articles to see the effect, and it would seem just sharing it once on each social media account has helped loads.
