Magento vs shopify - which one would you guys recommend?

I see that shopify charges 2.0% per transaction. So if i use Paypal as my merchant, i am paying like total of 5% for each transaction, which can really adds up.

For magento, it seems to require a lot of time and development for it to load fast and look good.

Please share your experience and thoughts on this. Thanks.

Magento is excellent!!

Yes it is slower at the very first stages but you will find ways how solve it ;)

I am not a fan of Magento and am in the process of looking for alternatives.

another easy alternative is PrestShop.

The problem with it is - you might have problems with a shop when the major updates will come up. + it is still buggy

Magento is a little cumbersome to learn to use properly, but when your shop grows you'll be happy you opted for it.

I've built sites with every ecommerce platform going, and i would recommend open cart & presta as easiest, once you get the hang of using them (or pissed at not being able to do something, then you should move onto magento, or virtuemart, which give you complete freedom. I don't see much of a dialog for virtuemart on this forum, (joomla plugin) but its easy to use if your technical enough, and very flexible. Tons of free plugins and templates, and integrates easy as a cms.

o.p. - here's a magento specialist whose thread i came across earlier - ive got a client with an ebay store and as ive got NO experience of ecomm, ive got no idea what to recommend to them (they have several hundred items in their catalogue) so im on a similar mission to you.

thanks for sharing your experience guys, really appreciate this. So you guys dont recommend shopify neither right? I have some experience with magento, but i find it a pain to setup sometimes. Was just thinking shopify will give me a faster jump start, but then i saw the 2% transaction fee....

prestashop is well known and free alternative but if you want addons they cost a lot

ashop.com.au make good shopping carts and they also host for you or something, check their website.

Magento requires a VPN to run, otherwise the backend is really slow.

Does anybody still remember of VirtueMart ???? (Joomla)

I use Shopify and really like it. It is very user friendly, and I found a shopify registered "expert," who has been awesome to work with. I did most of the site building and had him come clean up a few things, and create some custom solutions. BTW, I'd personally stay away from PayPal and utilize Stripe. Shopify makes configuring this super easy and they have fair pricing.

What are some payment options/methods it comes with? And what about shipping methods?

Try Prestashop or Magento. I also use Drupal Commerce but it's really complicated and I guess an overkill for you.
D.

Why not use shopperpress? Here's a demo: http://shopperpress.com/wordpress-shopping-theme/

Do NOT be fooled, I have used every single cart system and this has beaten each and every one of them in terms of speed, customizability (since its based on a wordpress platform) not to mention the licenses allows you to do unlimited installs for a one time fee.

I have not used another shopping cart since I discovered it.

Take the time to learn magento. Once mastered it is a real powerful piece of software. To get the most out of it you need to run on a decent vps. It allows me to run 16 different storefronts from the same back end
