Have a look a what the other websites use, personally I get good results using English links when I am ranking in France and Germany, just try to get relevant links of course and you should be good !

.com works very well for chinese websites..... You mainly have to target the baidu search engine... It seems like HIGH pr backlinks is the key to rank there.... BUT i am not very sure how ONLY english backlinks will affect

ALSO you have to register your website to baidu!!

The main search engine in China is
    Code:
    www.baidu.com
So you need to do SEO targeting this search engine.
Yes .com works well. and you can buy the domain name in Chinese spelling too and redirect it to main .com domain.
    Thanks

Hope I'm not hijacking the thread too much, but also going for the "true" Asian market in the near future, namely Japan and South Korea. AFAIK Japan is still hot for Yahoo/Google, so no big deals there, but any ideas about Korea's Naver? Seems to have over 70% of market share, so that'd be the main target.

    Baidu is fucking weird man.

Paid results can appear in organic rankings, for one. To rank there, I hope you've got a big budget or a lot of automated ranking tools. You can spam the shit out of your site in Baidu (because everyone else is) and I hope you're prepared to pay for a lot of high PR/homepage links.

Without a Chinese IP, you're pretty gimped with Baidu and will always be seen as kind of a second class citizen with it. Don't even think about doing PPC in Baidu either, as you'll need a Chinese IP and a Chinese bank account/company holding address to do so.

To the person asking about Japan - you're right, Yahoo is still pretty big there. The thing is though is that Yahoo Japan actually 'leases' the Google algorithm from Google. The algorithm is slightly different, but effectively the same - so if you can rank on one, you can rank on the other and pretty much get exposure across all of the organic searches.

Thanks for the clarification, guess that makes it a bit easier in a way then, when there's no need for any special stuff.

Yeah, makes it quite handy in that sense. Of course, how the Google JP alogrithm works compared to the Google US algorithm does appear to be quite different. No EMD update, for example, and quite a few spammy techniques still work (although Panda and Penguin definitely do exist there)

I from china ,baidu is more greedy then google ,
    baidu.jpg
as you can see the picture all mark with red are advertisement, with small word "-推广" the advertisement will take over top 10 may be more , not like google will have advertisement area after that ,it is the baidu himself's article. and then the black mark is the natural SERPS.
but baidu was always imitate google, so his not smart you can use some old way to deal with him, like wheel link or some blackhat way baidu can't investigated.
you can add my as friend ,if you want talk more
