Macbook or laptop for working on IM?

Lenovo Thinkpads are amazing computers to get second hand as they are typically built for industry instead of consumers which means that they are going to have higher-end parts and are typically going to be sold ridiculously cheap from liquidators. I got a W540 which is a 2014 model last year for $245. It has an i7, 8gb ram, a 256gb ssd, and a quadro graphics card. An extra $40 gets you a 1TB hdd and housing to replace the DVD reader (which will NEVER get used). Thinkpads are super upgradeable too. The one negative thing I will say about think pads are that they are typically pretty large, thick, and heavy. It can be a pretty big hassle to carry one around all day so keep that in mind. I wanna say the body style is a lot more modern looking for the more recent think pads....this might be the route you want to go if you don't like having people talking trash about how your computer looks :P

Second-hand apple products are also pretty cheap. As far as MacBooks go there are a few things to consider. Even though most MacBooks might look the same and even seem to have the same specs its VERY important to do your research so that you know what you are getting. Also if you are going for a newer MacBook Pro the newer models have 2-4 USB-C ports not USB so you will need adapters for EVERYTHING..... That being said I actually really like using USB-C as it makes all of the I/O universal. you always know you are going to need X to USB-C. These models also have a touch bar I don't know if people like it but I HATE it. There is no physical escape key and I hit the Siri button while typing often which is very annoying. Also to my knowledge current MacBooks are not upgradeable (I could be wrong though).

+1 for a used lenovo thinkpad. Best laptops ever if you're looking to use them for work.

I really love Mac, but for IM just don't do it a lot of programs not available for Mac.
or .. Mac + vps than yes.
 
Macbooks. Because they last 5+ years easily.
 
If you want the best performance for 1200, get a windows laptop. You get a quad/hexa core CPU, 1200 can only get you a dual core MacBook.

Since you are doing IM, I assume most of your time will be spent in a web browser so you'll need all the processing power and ram that you can get and a MacBook is never the best bang for your buck.

If you care about silly things like pretty design and nice animations, then get a MacBook but if you want the most powerful, upgradeable machine that 1200 can buy, then check out Dell, Lenovo,hp and Asus websites. They all have sale now.

Update: This Asus Rog gaming laptop is a great offering from Amazon. You 6 cores and 16gb ram which should do you well. You'd have to spend much more to get these specs in a MacBook.

for the best performance I would go with lenovo as well. MB air is out of Lenovo's league. I had both. Macbook is constantly overheated while Lenovo gets shit done

Is mac is your flavor then pick up a older mac pro either the old one or the new trashcan one, if windows is your pick get a used desktop that has good specs. I'm running on a i3 CPU with 6GB of ram and a Firestation AMD Graphics card with 5 monitors connected one of them being 4K. All running great and its a 3 year old setup I got it in 2017. But I mostly RDP into my local servers that I host in my home, so the desktop is just a thin client.

Its about whats in the inside not the outside. All you need is a good mult-thread processor 8GB of ram or more a fast disk space for OS (SSD) and then some spinning disks for storing large media.

For laptops Lenovo Thinkpads is 100% my choice has been for over a decade.

i was in your situation 5 months ago, once i sold my site to a client for $8k, first thing i want to do is buy a laptop, which is a longterm investment. I was a widows user for a very longtime and hesitated about Macbook. But anyhow, i talked with some friends and asked their opinions. Then i decided to go with Macbook Air, since i am using it for designs, marketing and developments. Its sleep, weightless and pretty damn good.

Its bit costly, but worth it. Go with macbook.
 
MacBook is better option as for me, you will never want come back to Windows after it, again
 
I will build a desktop. If you are kind of movement then a windows laptop will be a good choice. MacBook build quality nowadays is shit and you have to spend hundreds of dollars more to buy Apple Care if you don't want to throw away your MacBook after 2 years (or accept to pay hundreds of dollars to fix). The keyboard is shit too and I'm sure the software you need in your IM career will support windows better Mac.
 
Depends on your preferences. I used a Samsung Ultrabook before and switched to the Macbook Air. I find MacOS much more reliable and just more comfortable for work. The overall quality is great. I never had any problem. At the moment I am using a Macbook Air 11" from 2014, but I will change to a Macbook Pro 13'3" next month.

Also I would go with a 2nd hand one. Not sure if you know, but Apple themselves are offering refurbished Macbooks, which are usually $100-500 cheaper than from the original price. Still got all the warranty and so on!

Yeah, most laptops have changeable batteries different sizes too you can get a huge double battery almost. The newer models have a second battery built in the laptop that will keep the laptop running if the main battery dies while you get a charger on it or if you are swapping batteries you wont need to turn on the laptop. It can stay running forever.

But is it good for doing IM related stuff? which model wuld you suggest to buy?
