Low Comp Sites

Can someone tell me what methods of backlinking are still effective in 2014? I am only targeting real low comp keywords, what is the best way to start building links that wont get me penalized?

Should I buy a cheap link or two? Or should I be commenting on decent pr and relevant blogs? Or making a web 2.0? What still works for low comp sites?

see buying link is not a good idea. you can comment on relevant and high pr blog but it should be informative and relevant to the topic. And web 2.0 links will also be helpful for you.

If the competition really is low, make some 2.0's each with over 1200 words, and pictures, and soon you'll be first page. Then, keep building new 2.0's until you're around #5, then add some social signals to the mix (less than 20 of each type, do NOT over do it). Then you'll be climbing well...

You mean new web 2.0s which will not be blasted are enough to rank for low comp.?

I notice my competitor is doing this, he has a wordpress, a wiix, a weebly and a squidoo.

Would you recommend blog posting as well?

Absolutely! Just by putting it online you get a benefit, especially if it has plenty of good content.
In a recent experiment I discovered that when I blasted my 2.0's with comment spam, the rankings of my money site actually decreased; I then deleted those sites and took the content from them (about 20 sites with ~400 words each) and made 6 new 2.0 sites, each with 1100-1500 words, and built NO backlinks to them. The money site came back stronger than ever, and to this day (about a month later) is still climbing, with nothing further done to it. It's now page 1. Adding content to those 2.0's on a monthly basis will also help climb the rankings.

Take note, though - it's a very low competition term, with <500 intitle:"keyword" results. I'll probably do a handful of social signals next (eg 20 of each), then watch and wait...

Do you use only your KWs as anchors with the web 2.0s or is it mixed with naked URL and brand anchors?

Do you set Social Signals yourself of do you use a service? I was thinking about using a Drip Revolution by crork which provides manual dripfeeded signals by all the big platforms. The smallest package is 300 signals per month though, I think that may be too much. As I understood it, its possible to split the packages between different sites, so I probably put 150 on a new site within the 1st month and keep increasing the number until I am on #1 (combined with the web 2.0s links (KW-anchor) and links from targeted forum posts, blog comments etc. (non KW-anchor)

First thing to do before getting links,check if your onpage seo is properly optimized.
