I was analyzing my competitors links on ahrefs and I see that they have 25k backlinks from 900 ref domains. From what I have read on here that means that they are just low quality links and they seem to be random sites that have nothing to do with their site. So if I was to have more links from more ref domains does that mean I would rank higher than them? Is there something I'm missing?

Having lots of backlinks doesn't necessarily mean low quality. If they had 25k links from 10 domains then yes. But you need to check their links individually.

If you have checked they are not relevant, low trust etc and have high outbound links, then you don't need 25k links yourself. Just good quality links from relevant authority sites. You could out rank a site with 25k bad links with a handful of good links with conditions mentioned above.

there are exceptions althrough if it was so easy then anyone would just fire GSA and make 25k backlinks from random, spammed sites

important things to think about:
- the more authority site has, the more spam it can take
- maybe these spam links arent really that spammy?
- it can have strong hidden links
- 25k links in total could have a lot of link juice and other link benefits

and one more:
- google may have been tricked into thinking that these websites are actually high value and relevant for this niche

Just remember 1 good quality link with good trust flow etc from a relevant authority site, is worth 1000 bad links or more

I completely agree @aidenhera , but from what the OP says he is new to SEO, so perhaps we need to say things a bit slower and clearer than throwing around GSA, the power of contextual compared to profile etc etc. Just a thought so they can learn

Thanks for your reply. Yeah I looked at lots of the links and many of them just had the link in really small text at the bottom of pages that were completely irrelevant. Their domain has a strong domain rating though so perhaps that could be it? Also, if google doesnt like spammy links wouldnt people be able to just spam their competitors link and get them lowered?

Thanks for your reply. I have a question about what you mean hidden links? Are there ways to hide links from ahrefs? Is there some other way to find if there are some?

You can set rules that certain crawlers that tools like ahrefs use so they can't crawl your website

The domain authority and its age will make a difference, its relevance with regards the links made, the content they have put out, the content on the site and all the sites meta will make a difference in relevance.

I am no way as experienced as lots of people on here, but I would say work on your sites on page seo first, site structure, meta, good 1500 word plus content etc, then build some good foundation links, some social signals, and outreach your good content to relevant authority sites. With this done you will only need a few good links and social signals and all if your content will out rank your competitor with 25k unrelevant links

If you set your on page and site structure seo etc spot on now, you'll be amazed how much difference that will make. Also what ever you do after that will be complimented and boosted by that

There used to be days of negative seo attacks where unscrupulous people would blast competitors with thousands of bad backlinks but these days Google is much smarter, it just doesn't take these links into account so wouldn't make much difference

If most of the links lack quality factors like high trust etc, it's worthless to buy more of such. Try to target links from authority sites and you wouldn't have to buy a huge number of links
