I've been ranked 3 and 4 nearly a month now for a keyword. Yesterday, I was messing with the HTML template and removed the footer credit (which contain some other website's backlink). 10 hrs later, my website disappeared from first page and It got moved to #140 in serps! I already changed to template back and nothing has changed. Does anyone know what is the problem and can help me solve this? Thanks!

Also I checked for backlinks, all my backlinks are gone! However, when I check site:http://www.mywebsite.com still shows on google. Any one knows why is this happening?

has your website got cached after you changed the template again?

I'm confused, you changed the footer of the site that fell in the rankings?

Or did you change another websites footer that HAD your link in it?

If its the first one I really don't think that has ANYTHING to do with the drop in your rankings. Unless you "broke" the linking structure of your site and removed links to internal pages which in turn are now isolated without any links to them from any pages on your site.

Chances are this is an algorithm update or something else that caused the rankings.

I'd take a look at backlinks, how did you build backlinks.

Removing a footer link would not cause this. Look to other factors.

I've heard this happened a lot to a lot of different people because of the Google panda update, I see a lot of people going out and getting a lot more back links now because of it.

I had switched to a different template. I have not do any kind of link building for the site for the last month. Also webmaster indicates nothing happen to the site.

My other sub domain pages also moved down in SERPS also to #550 and #570

If you have switch to an entirely different template & google crawled it already, there is pretty much nothing you can do at this point, other than just wait. In my experience it takes months to recover from this, that if you do recover at all.

Never do major changes to your onsite when your site is ranking.

@lab , I have a Similar issue with one of my websites, I added a category and had 1 article listed in 2 categories, 3 days later my website is sat in the 800+ it's either becuSe of that or over linking or not enough fresh content

^^^
In your case what it's not the onsite changes you made that affected your rankings. Look at your linkbuilding.

Thanks for the response. Should I build more backlinks or just leave it?

@lab, I really don't think it's the links I'm building I've been building links for 4 years now, and never had this happen to me, I use sick, amr, sb, high pr networks, senuke

I'm going to 301 and make a new site

100s of things could have happened. Your site may have been manually reviewed & dropped, or the high PR network may have been deindexed or... you see what I mean.

Adding a category could cause a little change in rankings, but nothing major.

From experience I find if you alter a website a lot, google temp removes it from serps to reevaluate it all. Should return shortly.

just keep building backlinks as usual. google will recrawl and fix the index

Hmm... just changing a footer links doesn't change any SERPs. Maybe it'll come back very soon.
