I just recently update my website design to a new theme, i had about 300+ number 1 rankings and now at least 70% of them disappeard, is this normal and will they come back?

Yes you can get back the ranking , easiest way is switch back to old theme. Take some some time do some research and opt for example a seo ready theme in your niche.

Give it some time, google need to re-index everything so fluctuations are normal.
If rankings don't start improving in 2-4 weeks then revert to the old theme... but from my personal experience, everything will be fine.

Yes, you you may give some time to google reindexing your site. Eventually it takes some time.

keep in mind changing the theme on a frequent basis can give negative impact to your SEO

Don't worry it will surely come back soon, it's just because of the changes you made, give it some time.

Question for everyone above:

would simply changing your theme (ie the layout and design) but keeping the content and h1-6 tags the same still cause this fluctuation in rankings?

It depends.

I changed my theme from one to another multiple times on a website with 2000-3000 monthly traffic. I saw not even a slight change in my rankings or traffic amount.

However, as I said, it depends. It depends on how optimized is the new theme you're migrating to.

The new theme may be quicker/slower than yours.

The new theme may/may not have inbuilt schema markups.

The new theme may have a better/worse hierarchy of pages.

The new theme may have different H tags or URLs structure.

The new theme may have a better/worse HTML code even though this part may not affect your loading speed, it still can be causing Google to have a hard time crawling your website.

The new theme may have inbuilt SEO features and cause a conflict with your SEO plugin if you've been using one.

I bet that the new theme is with different structure (not necessary slower) .
You will most likely have your ranks back .. but need time.

(As long your theme is not nulled with malwares/spam links etc)

Changing your WordPress theme inherently affects your SEO because it fundamentally alters all of the pages search engines have indexed from your site. Generally, as long as your new theme is solid and you’ve made the right optimizations, you should be able to avoid any long-term setbacks, but there’s always a risk of short-term problems.

I like your point of view

When did you change theme?

It could be due to on going updates.

Wait for sometime before doing anything.

Wait for some time, the problem you faced might be the result of changing your theme. Soon your posts will rank back.

Don't worry about this..

Mostly theme is doesn't matter for ranking. It was depending on the content and backlinks.

Choose Low weightage theme, It should improve page speed and user-friendly experience. Then you can focus on content and backlinks.

Once you fix those pages, you should see results within a few weeks. Surely it will be getting back to normal..

It will come back but will take sometimes to crawl site
its may take few days I recommend
choose theme before start any website then you will face theme change issue and ranking issue in long term.
Now check Loading speed and everything showing properly from another pc
if everything okay then kws will come back
{Keep in mind few days ago google given massive update so keep look also that}

In most cases, it doesn't affect search traffic in general
Revert back to the old one if it doesn't change

Actually, there shouldn't be such a thing. Make sure the url structures in your old and new theme are the same. When searching site:site.com, make sure you can access your old content without any issues. If you can't log in to your old content without any issues then make sure it's the start of a big problem.

If some change is causing you problem, you should immediately go back to old theme.

No need to switch back instantly, first check if the theme got a speed issue or any other issue related to navigation and scripts. Basically optimize the theme.

just roll over old theme. don't sit and wait to get your dominance again. sometimes site having modified doesn't showed up again.

If you did it recently, then just wait for Google to reindex your site from scratch, it may take up to 4 weeks even. But after that period, if you still see that your ranking has failed, switch to the old theme or try a new one, but in this case, it would be the most secure to stick with what worked well before.
