lost my #1 sites

I still say its the power of your backlinks, not content. Why? A certain keyword/niche I was targeting I was doing pretty good up until a couple of days ago, ranking 1-3 for quite a few keywords. Now, no where to be found, still indexed though. The site I had beat out for a lot of keywords is still there, taking my spot for most of the keywords.

Now, to my point. This site has a total of 2 posts, hasnt been updated since 2008, has a total of 19 links. One of those links is a contextual PR 5, another is a PR 4, then the others are PR0 - N/A. Not a super competitive niche like loans or credit cards, but its not a stupid little niche like "crocheting for people over 50". No doubt this site is probably bringing in 15k to 20k uv a month, cause that was pretty close to what I was doing.

So my conclusion... Content is not always king, you dont have to update your site and have hundreds of posts, you just have to get some damn powerful links and you will rank.

As for my site, I will give it a couple of more days to see if it comes back. If it doesnt, I will start a new link campaign focusing on a more diversified link strategy. Oh, and my site has about 20 or more posts, all unique content, and somewhat diversified backlinks, and I havent touched it or done any backlinking to it since about a year ago. The only thing I did, and not too sure if this is why I dropped, is logged into a couple of my google accounts and gave it a plus one.

I was thinking to do the same, wait for a day or two and start linkbuilding.

I'm thinking if it's a good idea to remove link between my sites or not.

Some sites that have lost ranking are not linked in my network, this is very strange.

The only thing they have in common is my adsense account.

What basstracker is saying is probably your best bet at getting back to number 1. Get some variance in your backlinks. backlink your inner pages. Add content and build backlinks to them. Backlinking your top level will probably get you no where fast.

I heard that one of the Panda updates was focused on giving more value to the websites that updated constantly.

A good way to stay on the first page would be to post 400 + words posts at least twice a week

no suggestions about linking sites with same adsense account?

I am not so sure about that the big article sites get LOTS of new content daily and they seem to have been hit the hardest. Although alot of the content is just rehashed old crap!

For a long time I had only one adsense account and it wasn't a problem but the last 2 years or so things have been hotting up I now have 3 and working on another 3 just to make sure.

So get as many as you can.

How could I get many adsense accounts?

It's not against their policy rules?

Today this happend to a site of mine aswell, has been ranking for nr.1 for the keyword for about 2 years. The keyword is also in the domain name and backlinks are a variaty from forum profiles, social bookmarking sites, scrapebox comments, SE nuke articles (rewritten) and so on. But also some from ehow, reference etc.

Bing and Yahoo are still ranked nr.1 but google went down to pos. 705...
That is, yesterday nr.1, today nr.705.

If this was a new site I would just wait and continue to build backlinks and dont worry about it. But an established site is kinda confusing.

The site itself holds 33 pages with content, some of it written by me, some of it rewritten pretty heavily from other sources (around 80% unique).

Have not done anything really to this site for 1,5 year and it made around $50 a month on adsense. So it's not a big loss per say but the interesting thing is what google is up to.

a good way to update your site is to have a blog in its subdomain.


site.com will have blog.site.com or site.com/blog

that way you can update the blog without having to update your perfect homepage sales page at all

Start building more quality backlinks and possibly add some new content to the site. You should see your site crawl back to the top.

I agree with you that I should never stp to build links, but what is strange to me is many sites are still in their position and they have not built many links.

How you explain this?

Two things: Add fresh content and use various backlinks.

I agree I see this too. Several of my sites were hit as well, but when I look at other niches that do similar as me they have not added content for like a couple of years and still hold rank. So people keep saying add more content, etc. and your site will come back, but how do you guys explain these other sites (that still rank with less content). I think it's still better to generate backlinks again since that is the common thing I see at least for my sites getting hit. I really didn't do any recent backlinks in the last year or so to those that took a dive.

Google works in mysterious ways.. there's no concrete method to bulletproof your site from dropping ranks. The best approach is to diversify your links so that when google gives less weight to a certain type of link, your other links will maintain the sites rank. There are too many factors to consider why a site hasn't lost its position but one thing is for sure, adding more unique content and linking from high PR sites won't hurt it.

This true but it is actually better to have site.com/blog people dont realize this but google actually will treat subdomains differently.
