Hey everybody,

Just wanna get this off my chest/chat with people who are likely to understand (my family certainly wouldn't :D ). I'm currently a second year student at uni and I'm slowly but surely loosing all dedication for my degree. When I started, I loved it, it was challenging, interesting and fun, and the little bit of internet marketing I did gave me some financial freedom and meant I didn't really have to worry about money as much as my housemates (you've gotta bear in mind those were back in the days when all I knew was DP and whitehat marketing, so earning a couple hundred $$ a month was all good).

Jump to now, I know I no longer want a job related to my degree, its stripped all the love I once had for the subject. I look at my lecturers and I see monotone professors who have spent the last 30 years of their lives researching one protein or one reaction, man that SO isn't for me! Then I come on here and see people making massive ammounts of money and I simply know I could be doing the same if I had the time and freedom to do so.

Take the other week for instance, I spent the whole day learning the precise ins and outs of notch signalling in neurone differentiation for a crappy exam, then I come on here, work for 2 hours and make $150 (and I'm not even any good at this kinda thing!!!), how messed up is that? I genuinly see myself making my living online in the future, something a biology degree won't help me achieve. Don't get me wrong, I still love animals and will always wanna keep/work with them (thats what I'm IMing for, the freedom to be able to volunteer at zoo's/wildlife parks without having to worry about money).

I should add that I have no intentions of dropping out (well, unless I start pulling 5 figures a month :D ), I'm going to see this to the end, the problem is when I'm revising for exams (which I should be doing now, heh heh heh) all I can think about is how ridiculus this whole situation is, I'm spending my days learning about VERY specific things that don't really (in the grand scheme of things) mean anything, for a degree that won't lead me onto a job, when I could be setting myself up for life...

Can anybody else here relate? :D

Dude,

I'm in the exact situation as yours, and I got to a university where students graduate and make 6 figures in IBanking after a few years. I have done internships with firms like McKinsey.

Been 1.5 months in BHW, and I am making a nice sum of money- perhaps I dont need to work for anyone, ever.

My advice to myself, you, and every student out there - finish your goddamn degree.

Money is NOT everything..

I can't relate but it sounds like you should focus on school fulltime and IM in your free time. I believe you can have both. Finish what you start with all of your energy. :)

Ahahah im sitting in class as I'm reading this...it's a reality and science class...learnning about ancient greece. Honestly learning is fun...change your program maybe? U can always make money in life...so much of it going around :)

It certainly won't hurt you to finish. My whole approach to school was that I didn't want my daughter to use it as an excuse to not go to school when she's old enough to go to college. I didn't want her to say, "Well Daddy, you never finished school." That was my motivation. I could have given a shit less about being an engineer.

I am exactly in the same boat as you.
i am an engineering student and it sucks to learn about transistors diodes leds
when i can just make some money here.
the professors who earn crappy 800$/month will advice you on how to settle in your life.
hell noo!!!!!!!

I can relate, am a senior at high school, and well, am not planning on going to collage...

Just as well, given that you can't spell it :)

If you get into collage you will need scissors and glue rather than a high school diploma. On the up side, it is easier to get into than college, which is what I think you are talking about.

More seriously, I would suggest that a degree (or at least some classes) in Computer Science would be an excellent preparation for making serious money in the black hat community. Eventually all the easy money is going to go away as the markets get saturated and the loopholes get closed. The more you know about the industry, the better you will be able to adapt.

Get a degree, you will need a back up just in case.

I went into college wanting to major in physical education, with in a few short months after working online, I am truly fascinated by the internet and the freedom you can gain with it.

Which is why I am now majoring in Computer Science with a Minor in Business/Marketing.

I figured to be more successful than I am right now with Internet Marketing, I better earn a degree with Computer Science and know about Marketing.

I have even begun to start putting up a portfolio of my work and I am getting phone calls from Software companies that have starting salaries at $90,000+.

All this is happening when I am only entering my second semester of college, wonder what lies ahead of me after I graduate.

I have always been good with school, tell me something once and I pretty much remember it for life. I absorb information very easy, instead of studying I just hop on the computer to make a few $100 and then take a look over my notes afterwards.

I don't often talk like this, but here goes:

YOUR A F_ _ _ED UP STUPID A_ _ IF YOU DON"T FINISH!!

It's not even about money, it's about being well rounded.

You will regret it if you leave, just my two cents.

Best of luck to you.

Seriously, i understand your feeling haha.
I posted something like thing a while ago when i was on semester break and made quite a living just during a one month break.

For me, i would advice you to stick as well.. although at that time i wanted to quit.
I took the opportunity to learn to manage my time properly. Therefore giving me more time for IM and my studies.

DUDE you are just like me .. MY EDUCATION LIFE IS FUCKED UP NOW..

I WAS A GOOD STUDENT SCORING APPRECIABLE MARKS.. BUT I MAKE GOOD AMOUNT OF MONEY ONLINE AND THIS IS THE FIRST TIME I WROTE THE WORST EXAMS EVER.. :(

oh yeah, i am studying second semester right now. :)
Have a hectic schedule as well :)

Stick to your guns and tough it out! However, it doesn't sound like it is too late to give the old adviser a ring and say, "What up, holmes? Listen, we need to talk about a switchin' of the majors!" It is not uncommon for students ESPECIALLY IN NATURAL SCIENCES to switch majors around their sophomore year. If I were you, I'd take next semester to explore a wide variety of different topics. If it takes you an extra semester to graduate because you "wasted" one figuring out that everything else is even worse, then it will have been worthwhile. If you find that you're passionate about photography or philosophy or basket weaving, then fuggin' do it! College does not need to be about getting a career, no matter what anyone tells you. It is about finding what you are passionate about and learning how to excel at it.

EDIT:
Also, let me be the first to say that I think that Notch signaling and ligands are cooler than forum spamming and iframes!

I should reiterate I have every intention of seeing this through, my main reason is the whole "don't put all your eggs in one basket" thing.

I think my problem is this semester has been a fairly bad one for me (that coupled with increasing online success I guess), I've seen topics and modules that I was expecting to relish ruined by "the scientific process" (I could go on and on about why I think biology has lost itself these days, but I don't have a better solution so I'll keep stum). Take my animal behaviour module, it was a complete and utter joke, they should've called it "mathmatical models of animal behaviour" or "animal behaviour without the animals". My true passion is actual animals (particularly reptiles and insects :D ) which I've seen suprisingly little of considering my choice of course. I'm finding myself increasingly ditching my uni books when I get in and spending time reading other books (on reps/insects) that quench my thirst for knowledge, but ultimately do nothing to further my degree. I could tell you anything you wanted to know about scorpions...

Its funny, looking back, if I'd known what I do now I would have definatly gone down the philosophy route, and kept my interest in animals as a hobby (albeit a huge one) but I'm too far in now, I can't really start a 3 year degree from scratch now.

Heh, hopefully next semester will be better, I get to do a bit of photography (another passion of mine) and a few more interesting things like parasitology and the like.

stick the degree out. the markets will always be here to make money from. You may never get another chance at your degree!

I'm in the exact same position. i go back to uni on monday, i'm, in my 2nd year doing comp sci. I hate my course and subjects. there is no need in it. But i know it'll be good to have so i stick it out.

Why not stick your degree out, then go full time to internet marketing for a year or 2 and see how it goes. You can always go into biomedical science or whatever if you're bored or it doesn't work out!

You can always earn some serious money over the summer though aswell ;)
