I have a great idea for an ebook and I'm interested in getting into the scene. What software would I use to create an ebook? Where is the best place to sell one and any other advice?

Much appreciated :)

The main software to use to compose ebooks is your brain tissue. Most people don't care about fancy formating, just the content and key screenshots that explain your concept. Just make the presentation clear, useful and complete enough for most readers to follow and implement. If it's structured like a case study it may carry more believability to many. It would be very helpful for you if the topic was really in high demand.

If it's IM related, obviously selling it on WF as a WSO will work, but if you don't have the money yet for that you could sell it on DP to raise the cash from initial sales, then reinvest it in the WSO set-up to make more cash from that highly responsive audience. Make sure the title and landing page description and keywords are SEO friendly, that way you can create a blog that can generate traffic and sales all on its own.

Kindle is a great place to sell the ebook if it is worthy and catchy enough.

Use Google Docs. It's free and you can log in from anywhere in the world if you need to to edit your book online.

I highly suggest making your own site, putting your book on there, and using a pay processor. That way no one can take it down just because they don't like you on a forum.

Keep it at least 50 pages long. If you want. You can go beyond 50 pages but in this day and age your book could be copied and shared in the blink of an eye.

I would suggest you to write a good ebook with affiliate links.

Dont sell it, give it for free, It could be a tutorial about how to create a WP site, etc. And then put your affiliate links here and there for hosting and stuff :)

I actually have two eBooks published via Kindle Direct Publishing.(KDP) I'm not making huge amounts of money but they already paid back the time I invested in them.
Who do you want to sell to? The general public? Then Amazon's Kindle is the place to be. It's extremely easy to publish eBooks through KDP and formatting the book is literally very simple HTML. And there are free converters that turn you book into .ePub or .pdf at the click of a button.
edit: The key to success is finding the right niche and marketing, of course.

You can also sell on the iPad and Nook platforms. Just keep the price the same to avoid competition conflicts.

Download http://www.openoffice.org/download/. It is a free software suite that is similar to
Microsoft Office. Use the word processor of OpenOffice and write
your ebook, then export as a PDF. Voila! Ready to sell EBOOK! :)

Cheers . . . and best of luck! - "Wiz"

Yeah but those eBook markets are way smaller and they don't have Amazon's amazing marketing behind them. iBooks (Apple's eBook marketplace) is especially notorious for the meagre sales not being worth the hoops you have to jump through. Nook can be an easy way to make your book free, though.

Some advice - if it's good, it will get distributed free (especially if it becomes a WSO) for that reason, try to include some affiliate links, so even if people steal it you still have some earning potential

Apart from that, if you've got Word 07 you can use the 'page background' tool to make the book look good, aswell as their built in formatting tools ,
Oh and good luck!

I find that writing an ebook is the easy part. I've written a couple just using the "pages" app in Mac. The problem for me has been getting the word out - That's the hard part. I know I kinda shot myself in the foot picking a competitive niche, but that's because I love the subject matter. I know my ebook is not junk though. The 3-step process I describe will deliver on its promises (I have a 3-step process that will save Orlando vacationers up to $1,000 on their Walt Disney World vacations). All ebooks offer a money-back guarantee and usually have a squeeze page somewhere along the way. So if you want advice, I'd say start now trying to figure out how you want to spread the word about your ebook - especially if you know it is quality content.

What types of tools/procedures are you using to lock the ebooks? Redirecting from PayPal to a static page seems like an easy way to get it leaked, how are they locked?

Ultimately, there is no way to completely protect an ebook. But to answer
your specific question, you can use http://www.e-junkie.com/ service which will allow you
better "leaking" protection than having a thank you/download page.
