Hey myownworld. I have been a Wordpress user for a little over a year. I am certainly not an expert, but I know enough to be dangerous. My site is hosted so I am coming at this from that viewpoint. I moved to WP from Blogger and am very happy I did. The range of plugins for WP is nothing short of amazing. These plugins allow you to do things such as have image galleries, customer reviews, social bookmark buttons, visitor stats, etc. It is my understanding that the free version of WP does not allow you to use these plugins. That alone would be a deal killer for me. I think you can find really cheap hosting. In fact, I believe the new hosting company for BHW (Hostwinds?) is offering members a 90% off coupon right now. So long story short, I would definitely find hosting I could afford and use WP that way. Hope that helps.

If you can only afford the domain go for a blogger site with your own domain. You can do a lot with blogger... not nearly as much as with self hosted wordpress, but enough to get you started. Free hosting is the worst and the amount of downtime you will experience is not worth the hassle. Blogger doesn't have downtime. Later when you start making money you can transfer the site if you want to.

I find wordpress alot better than blogger because you can do so much more with wordpress. The plugins you can get are amazing and can really help out alot where as with blogger your pretty much stuck with blog posting and not really any variation. I use wordpress and just use hostgator for my monthly webhosting and so far its been alot better.
