Looking for forum help

I am interested in taking a step into making a forum but I need some help with what sort of software or plugins I should have for users and to make it a lot better. Please send suggestions as I would like to gain revenue from such website and also a decent amount of traffic.
Forgot to mention that this forum is not intended to replace BHW of course.
