I've been down this route before and found out that what I think may be a great idea for a forum just never took off. I spent months posting, buying posts, marketing, advertising, etc. Just never took off.

Checkout PHPbb, a developer from upwork should be able to set it up for you for less then $100. Good luck on the new venture.

You are right, i think forum building, management and monetizing is worth venturing into. I am eyeing it too.

You can give SIMPLE MACHINE FORUM (SMF) a try. Just google how to install it, get a domain and host and play with it

As someone has suggested above, SMF is plain and simple to do. I was able to get one up and running 5 years ago, even though I'm not tech savvy.
