I'm just wondering how do some people do a remix of a song? Do they download the song to their software and the software shows the strips/sounds in different lines. Because I'm looking for a software like this.

If anyone knows a software like this please tell. Free or for cost.

To clarify: An software that allows you to easily manipulate the sound.

Thank you

A free one I use is Audacity... but there are quite a lot of choices..

A lot of new/younger producers use Ableton Live these days.

For hip-hop Fruity Loops/FL studio is really popular.

Quite a few use Logic and ProTools too.

None of these are free.

Personally I would recommend Ableton. I'm learning it at the moment and it is not too hard. I decided on it after doing a lot of research. A friend of mine has been using it for two years, and he is making awesome stuff now.

Adobe Audition 1.5 is nice , and useful for professional work .

Any of these allow me to open a audio file and mix it?
