mods: not sure if this is the right place to post this thread, so please feel free to post it elsewhere (i was half thinking it might be best in the OFFLINE forum as this product seems ideal for offline clients), but in the meantime, let me introduce you all to this little cracker:

    HTML:

gecko board is a beautifully designed online dashboard which combines live data feeds from your websites analytics (google/ mixpanel/ chartbeat), micro blogging (twitter), your online invoicing (freshbooks), your online support desk (zendesk), your rss feeds (RSS), from foursquare, from a polling website etc etc

i havent used it myself so i cant give you any feedback on it, but my mind is ticking over from thinking about the possibilities of how this could be best deployed.

im specifically thinking in terms of how an offline client would positively glow when they open up a web browser that shows them all the metrics and stats of whats going on within their business: visitors, autoresponder sign-ups, sales invoices sent out, payments received, etc etc

equally, whether youre into OFFLINE or not, all of the above can be deployed within your own business(es) giving you a fantastic heli-copter view of whats happening at any given moment.

check it out yourself, especially if youre into OFFLINE.....

yup, its very elegant. are you planning to use geckoboard for your own AFFILIATE sites, or are you into OFFLINE and intending to provide your clients with access to all these stats for their own sites (that youre promoting)?

i dont think this is needed for the client to have, but rather for the person handling their marketing. it would make handling multiple clients statistics much easier for yourself but letting a business owner in on it is a waste imo. they don't care about stats all they care about is profit. stats are for nerds like us.

HEAR WHAT YOURE SAYING, but at this moment in time im ambivalent about it - ive got two trains of thought on this (and im specifically thinking about OFFLINE) and those two thoughts are:

    1. give your offline clients access to all of this data relating to their website and youre arguably giving them a stick to beat you with because on a daily basis theyre seeing LIVE DATA FEEDS telling them that their presence isnt what they want it to be and guess who's going to get the blame?

    2. equally, bearing in mind the last point in the above paragraph, all of a sudden youve got yourself an educated client who doesnt need to be told or convinced by you that they need to increase their focus and budget for their online marketing.

in terms of their online marketing and online presence and customer satisfaction, geckoboard tells them everything they need to know about the key-performance-indicators (kpi's) for their business. the data is supplied in an easily understood fashion, always pointing to ways of improvement.

instead of having a boring inanimate website that does nothing for them as a business owner or marketing manager, all of a sudden they can see the direct connection between their website and their business - perhaps for the first ever time - and guess who gave them the power of that revelation?

who do you think is going to be seen as an internet marketing god? who will they go to first when they want to improve those poor kpi's? who will be seen as their bolt-on-specialist-marketing-department? who will they want to build long term strategic client partnerships in this kind of open relationship?

sure, there are plenty of small businesses out there who just wont be interested and i mean not even remotely interested in this information, but medium sized businesses with small marketing departments should gobble it up like a fat bird in an eat-all-you-can-chinese-buffet.

youre giving them a dynamic integrated business tool thats highlighting marketing successes and failures on a minute-by-minute basis (well, every 30 seconds actually), for instance:

    - lots of unique visitors to their site this month = success (message: YOU are doing your job right)
    - those uniques are only spending 30 seconds on the site = failure (message: their content isnt good enough and THEY need to spend some money with you on new content)
    - only 27% of visitors to their site are returning visitors = failure (message: it could be viewed as an opportunity to review and improve their commercial offering to customers)
    - customer satisfaction survey tells them 74% are happy with the company = partial success (message: customer service needs to improve a lot if theyre to hit 90%+ satisfaction)
    - 16 people have joined the autoresponder today = success (message: their email list is growing BUT it still might be worth tweaking the squeeze page or changing the pop-up, etc etc)

    etc etc etc

all of this information and data is available to them NOW. its INSTANT. they can RESPOND IMMEDIATELY by fine tuning their activities in a specific area of their business to improve their business. they dont need to wait a couple of weeks whilst they try to collate and filter everything together through spreadsheets, its all there in front of their very eyes on their pc or on their smart phone. its a priceless add-on that youre providing your clients.

actually, i said at the start of this little tome that i was anbivalent about using geckoboard with offline clients, but reading this back to myself, theres nothing ambivalent about my tone of voice. looks like ive become an advocate for it....
