So, I'm not doing anything blackhat, no automated backlink spam, and I'm writing targeted articles in a broad niche that I'm interested in. Unfortunately, and I've tried everything to remedy this, 75% of visits to the site last 5 - 10 seconds. I've chosen a readable theme (at the sacrifice of my CTR rate), and I've increased the font size a bit. My content, and I've talked with some readers through comments, is considered interesting by them, but most people who come in via reddit (my main source of traffic ) don't stay too long. The ones who do always come back for the next update :P So, I ask you good people of blackhatworld, what can I do to increase the visit length time? An on-entry message? Any reply would be nice.

TL;DR: How do I make my visitors stay at my blog longer.

In the past to help my bounce rate I have placed a video near the top portion of the page and that effectively lengthens visit time. Just make sure you are optimizing for the right keywords and as long as your information is informative and to the point your visit times should be fine.

Choosing attractive titles .. And using keywords like
>>Must Read<<
>>Unbelievable<< etc
Can attract the readers for a long i guess :/

Put some free offers from affiliate networks in the form of videos in the page with attractive graphics around. You can expect the visitors to stay longer then.

The design of the site is very important, even though it is ideal to have a good design and content, I find that a good design with bad content is better than great content with bad design in terms of bounce rate.

If your visitor came via reddit, I suggest you to have content
such as: Top 10 Beautiful Travel Place or Top 10 Best Tablet, etc
this will attract more visitors to read on your post.

Firstly, you should make your website contents very much attractive for your online visitors. Your content should not only be of very good quality and unique, but should be informative and should be attractive such as "Exclusive Feature of Android Phones" and "Wonders of Samsung Tablets" and so on. Furthermore, your website designing and other pics and videos should be attractive for most of your visitors.

the best way to keep your visitors inside your blog is to make inter relate your contents. you can add interesting images, attractive topics and of course related topics. and yes adding videos with some of your keywords is a very good way to keep your visitors inside your blog.

wow this thread give me some ideas to improve my website traffic. :)

Reddit users are very "snobbish". You have to capture their attention when they land on your site. In my experience, they love videos, pictures, and lists.

A call to action is critical as well. Remind them why they visited and then direct them. If selling remember "ABC!"

In my opinion, it really depends on the visitors if they really want to stay longer, but you can do something for them to stay, if you can give them something much interesting on your site, then there are great possibility that they will stay, if there is a content that is really catching you'll have what you are asking for.

I am a web designer and for me personally the design is in the first place. Yeah, maybe the content is more important but have in mind that most people act by intuition. The first thing that catches the eye is the design and the colors, then the headline and the text. Also, the good design and nice colors make the site look professional and trusty.

If your visitor liked your site and decided to stay, then the headline is the second most important factor. A few examples that worked for me best are headlines with "TOP 10", headlines with a question mark(something to provoke and set the visitors thinking), and a headline as "Product/Service Review".

Then as somebody said above - have very good and attractive graphics related to the subject. It is easier for people to see and understand an image than to read the text. Put them in the right place but don't overuse them. A video is always a must near the top or in the middle of the content. A good presentation video(not too long) is the key factor to grab the visitors attention and to keep them longer on the site.

Finally - you need to be a good writer and to understand your visitors' psychology. Try to give the people arguments and examples to convince them, make them to read and understand the content easily. Use questions and answer them, make lists, use bold or a different text color where needed, use call to action etc...

An advice - just visit warriors forum and check some very good written WSO. The people there know what they are doing and some of them are very successful even only because of their marketing and writing skills rather than the quality of their products or services.

Aside from what I said, I also agree with this very well said answer, at least this one is really detailed.
