Long time lurkers painful path to competency

Good afternoon BlackHatWorld,

This is very long overdue and I can’t believe it has taken me so long to put my big boy pants on and try this. I have been lurking here for close to ten years now and have finally decided to stop creeping around and jump in.

I will keep this first post short and sweet to avoid any nervous rambling. I like many others this year have been incredibly humbled from medical issues and like everyone being shutdown in some way from COVID. The silver lining to this epic s&^$ show of a year has been free time to think...lots of free time. That’s thinking has manifested itself into me going all out and trying this.


The goal of this thread is simple and plain.

-Help finally give back / contribute to this site in the ancient art of trail and error. I really have zero clue what I am doing so that’s my foundation.
-Show how to practically use small bits of my current income not made online to seed a new career in website development and content creation.
-Build camaraderie with fellow newbies and professionals and even make some new friends.

Now that the foundations of this journey have been laid out a little back story seems like a good idea.

I will be funding all of this as a broke ( financially and for now physically ) 29 year old who is starting from scratch. I will be using my gig income ( not sure if i can say from where so I’ll avoid that for now ) and post how I use my gig app crumbs and stubborn hard work ethic to seed, fertilize and hopefully grow this into a new stable career.

Thank you all so much for the the literal decade of free knowledge , I hope to finally help people the way a lot of you have helped me.

Serious shoutouts are in order but I’m not super sure if that is kosher here.

So as I come close to the end of the first week of this journey I feel a bit of an update is in order.
I had a fantastic start to this week with a stomach flu and used the free time I couldn't drive for my job to write some content for the future sites. I wrote the first post on my phone and didn't want to break my thumbs writing a book on the phone so I'll dive a bit deeper today into the plan for 2021 seeing as were about done with 2020.

I have been told many times that it's better to crawl first and then learn to walk sooooo... if y'all think I am doing too much for where I currently fall on the learning curve
(which is a total beginner) then please let me know to dial it back a bit. I am a number nerd and over think everything , A.K.A
I aim too long and don't shoot enough when doing something new.

My idea here is to start two sites for the sake of learning more at one time and I love stressing myself out for shits and giggles.

Website 1

*I have a goal summery for WEBSITE 1 at the bottom of the section for those who want to avoid my ramblings/ romantic ideas but are still interested in the main goals/numbers of the site journey. I wont be made if you don't read all my nonsense, thanks for checking me out.*


I currently do gig work fulltime because I am unable to walk/stand for long periods of time and need to make cash not generated standing up or doing physical labor. A quick search on YT/google shows lots of people who have channels about their earnings/horror stories so the idea is far from unique.

I am looking at doing a daily and weekly a YT channel and a website with a blog about my day to day earnings and weekly budget to show how to start building a website with gig work cash. I have seen lots of people here say never to tell what their site / niche is but anyone who drives/delivers gig work fulltime or more than I do has earned it so take this idea , DO IT NOW.... Just post a journey about it here and share it with the community. This first site is about me learning and hopefully teaching how to make and website , I'm not looking to a make a million cash of this bad boy. I'll get greedy and paranoid when I am smart enough to know why and what to be paranoid about .

I really want my fellow gig workers to see how to get out of gig work for good. I really mean that too, I want to help people who are hard workers to get to their personal finish line faster. I want the delivery drivers and gig workers who have gotten taken over a barrel the last couple years to grow and learn with me , not sell them a scam and lie to make myself look good(and hopefully rich but ,I digress) . I believe constant personal growth and as a part of this crazy tribe in these crazy times I feel its my duty to inject some hope and knowledge (with humility and humor) into what is looking like a long winter and 2021 for gig workers here in the USA*.

* I am sure other countries are having a hell of a time as well but I have no clue about the app gig work seen in other countries. Let me know what's up in your neck of the woods.

So that is site number one. I am going to catalog the ups and downs of running a 1099 gig contractor business for all of 2021. I also will show how to take that money and use it and your time to build something more/better than being a gig slave for ever.

I'll summarize the plan/goals of the site for those who are sick of my ramblings.

Website 1 Goal Summary
Goal 1) Learn how to build and run a website.
Goal 2) Learn how to use and implement all the SEO ideas and practices I've tried to wrap my head around on this site for ten years as a lurker.
Goal 3) Hold myself to a god like state of accountability on setting and reaching my preset goals for content production / whatever I need to do to keep this ball rolling fast and where I want it to.
Goal 4) Post the site for sale on December 31st, 2021. I feel it is the complete life cycle of making websites for cash so it only seems fair to show what a year of effort looks like in the form of real world appraisals / cash offers. I don't know how estimating/ auditing a site to set a price tag works but I have a year and some change to figure that out.

Basically, if the website gets good traffic, I wouldn’t sell in just a year.

I will take the advice I've seen here on BHW time and time again and will say this site will be a hobby niche site. I would like to keep this site long term for the simple fact that "mastering" this hobby will take me a very long time and I feel that this topic has a long shelf life of relevance on the internet. This is why I want to start with two sites at the same time , if am going to get into making websites/ development and content writing into a my career come hell or high water then building a site to flip and a site to keep simultaneously seems wise enough if I don't die of sleep deprivation.

The idea here is to have a weekly blog about the hobby which has tons and tons of topics to write about and the ways to get better at said hobby topics is an almost infinite source of material. I will also have a YT account for this hobby which will be my primary focus of content development and I will upload 7-14 videos per week depending on the perfect video length which I will have to figure out. . This hobby is something I already do many hours a week so simply setting up a camera to record wont be too much work. The editing of these videos however is gonna be a pile ol' pile of "yikes help me".

I have WEBSITE 1 that I will be rolling out at the same time which is all writing as far as content creation goes so I figure I'll focus on visual content for WEBSITE 2 (this one) so I can expand my content generation knowledge base faster. I also have zero time or knowledge spent on video editing so I figure recording something that I already do will help keep my stress to create content lower which allows the stress of me not knowing my ass from a hole in the ground as far as web/content development goes.

Website 2 Goal Summary

Goal 1) Learn how to edit videos in general and aim tailor that for youtube.
Goal 2) Learn how SEO wording works for getting these videos ranked/indexed in the least newbie/ ignorant way possible.
Goal 3) Long and short term plan / goal accountability. That means yelling at myself when I want to be a lazy ^&%!head.
Goal 4) Hit the 1000 subscribe / 4,000 view hours ORGANICLLY by 05/01/2021 (May 1st, 2021) that's required to sap tap that sweet, sweet youtube money tree.
Goal 5) Have 500 videos uploaded by December 31st, 2021.
Goal 6) Have 250,000 words written for the blog site. That's roughly a 500 page book worth of blog posts for my fellow number nerds.

So that is the meat and potatoes of the this journey and its goals. I realize that I should have uploaded all this with my first post last week but hey I gotta start somewhere. Now for a progress report for week one. I will try my hardest to keep the website updates color coded for ease of reading.

Website 1 ( the gig journey site) in red.

My apologies in advance for messing this up sometimes when I'm tired or angry but it seems like a good call to keep everything in some kind of order. If you're color blind then I'm sorry this won't help so I'll strive for coherent nonsense as much as my current skill set allows.


Website 1 (GIG site)

Not too much progress here for week one. I wrote 1,710 words for my homepage and after I get my bills caught up this weekend I will be looking at buying hosting and a domain name next Friday for a holiday present to myself. The site is about my income and earnings doing gig work for 2021 so I have a couple weeks to get the thing up and running and not too much worry for content for a couple more weeks. I'll have some questions and updates for this next Friday.

I would like ask anyone reading this what they think I should do as far as social media accounts like Twitter and Instagram. I have never used these for my personal or professional lives and I deleted my Facebook in 2010 so I am having to relearn all this socail media crap ... I mean stuff.


Website 2 Hobby niche site

I plan on buying a domain and hosting for this site in the next couple weeks as I am not on a dated time line like I am for the gig site. This topic is way more competitive and I am wondering if it's worth maybe buying a domain name or perhaps even a website that is shorter and simple name wise and more to the point. I can't see myself buying a .com for this niche that is cheap and useful. I am really bouncing back and forth on this and would love feedback.

I was able this week to write about 6,500 words in 7 articles ranging from 508 to 1,523 words each. I have spent many hours reading the @BigRon income school journey along with many others and can say that was a huge motivator for me to try this. I really owe that dude a few beers for sure. I have a million more people to thank but I'll try and keep that on their forums. Anyway from what I've seen about "pillar posts" and all that jazz I am not worried about that stuff at all. I have some subjects that will easily turn into 5-10k word posts without sounding fake and spammy. I read a lot and I hate when I feel like someone is trying to sell me their links to buy crap instead of teaching me about the thing I clicked on to read about in the first place. I never finish those articles and I never buy their stuff.

Would it be worth it to get a AHERF or similar site subscription for keyword research now ?...OR should I throw the site up first and then SEO audit my content at a later point in time?

(Its like a broke nerd version of the chicken or the egg.)

I want to sell encyclopedias not snake oil , no judgment on snake oil salesmen but I have been there and done that and I'm over the quick buck at the expense of shortchanging people. I know how important ranking is and all that but my lack of talent in SEO makes me nervous about my content sounding generic or inorganic or not like me for that matter *gasp* which would really suck. I have no problem waiting a bit longer for success with this if my content reads better with less keywords and all that comes with slaying that dragon.

I just had an idea to keep me on track with goals for this site so I'll toss it in here and include this on all future updates.

So that's it ladies and gents, I am off to go work my overnight shift and bang out some crazy hours this weekend doing my job I hate but I will be writing when I can and will be looking around for some good advice on if I should buy a nicer domain name for the niche hobby site. I just can't figure out what to do on that yet.

When I start spending money on this I will keep a continual log of expenses too but for now I am $0.00 invested in this. I won't
be keeping track of my time spent on this yet either. I am considering it just for numbers sake but I don't know if I am over doing it. One thing I need to do is set a time in the future where if this isn't working when do I give up? Not to sound arrogant but I'm not the give up type but I know that failure is possible , any thoughts on a healthy time line for that?

I plan on turning this thing out to the best of my ability. These sites are my first goes at this so I am really focused on the how and why but I would love to monetize as much of this as I can. The gig site will for sure break the 4th wall and talk about me trying to make money on the site while teaching people how to do the same thing. I hope that answer the question well.

So I took today off and decided to write some larger posts for my Gig journey website and learn about internal link building to make the opening of the site better.

So here is a little update on my content writing.

Website 1
So from last time I updated I am now at 20,856 words for 18 articles. Working all night and then coming home and getting these 18,000 words done this last 3 days was more than I thought I’d be able to do. At the risk of sounding corny that was a really cool mini victory for me. Most of the articles are 650-1300 range with me finishing two long posts just now that were 4,478 and 2,732 words. I forgot to make a word count goal for this site for 2021 so iI will start that now.

I spent the last two days when I was working listing to the <SEO.co/> podcast and was curious if anyone had a review on what they thought of that guy. He had about 30min where he explained how to linkup your internal links to the site and I didn’t have a clue about that.

Seeing as I am going to release the gig site first I figured it would be wise to get a bunch of posts ready even though most of that sites content will be my daily updates on income and then a blog post about it. I originally wasn’t going to do anything other than the daily posts but after spending some time reading and listing about getting your site internally linked to help google bots find you I figured having 30-50k worth of starter content internally linked would be wise. I figure too that when i post my daily updates i can then link things to my article bank as well so that’s a quick evolution in my idea that i think is smart and worth it.

I am also thinking now that it might be smart to write a product review section for all the random stuff you can buy for this job. i have used tons of different apps and real world thing to buy and i figure that would allow me to have some amazon or eBay affiliate links on the day I release the site. If that sounds too spammy or cheap please let me know.

Any thoughts would be great and I’m sorry if these “ideas” are just no brainer duh things but you gotta start somewhere .

Happy New Year everyone, I just realized how long it's been since I updated this but with the holidays I'm sure no one really noticed anyway.


I have spent lots and lots of time learning how to internal link my website the last few weeks as I can no clue what this was on 12/01/2020. I am learning so much but find my plan being tweaked and then I am left starting plans over and over as I get information overload. I am sure this is far from a unique problem to have but I find myself a bit intimidated buy the every changing world SEO folks live in.

The one thing I have stayed on path with is the thing I know already, writing. That has been really fun and the only real safe harbor I've had so far in learning to do all this. So after my holiday decompress I am looking good and feeling almost ready to put the first site online.

So from my last update I have added another 10,771 words for a grand total of 31,400ish words so far for this site. I am very pleased with this to be honest , it's not the Lord of the Rings but hey it's like halfish of The Hobbit. I keep track of the articles I write along with word count in a old school notebook because I like paper and pens more than spread sheets but here is a basic outline of the process.

Not a bad problem to have but I still got myself worked up a bit about not being smart enough yet. I have another 20-30k words left in articles to write and then it will just be my 3-5 blog posts per week on my income and budget updates for the rest of 2021. This blog site project is doing its job so well in that I am already seeing how to make my analog caveman ideas into an articulate digital plan without throwing out buzz words and terms ( that I didn't have a clue about) like I was a month ago. I also bought my website domain name as Christmas present to myself and will have more on that in the next few weeks.

Now to pick my own brain for a sec.

Seeing how quickly I got that content done (about 38,000 words in 2 weeks) made me realize that I can scale this thing much faster and cleaner that I first thought possible. I am realizing that with proper research for what sites to make , research being keyword rankings, DA competition and for me personally can I spend 200 hours learning about the subject? Now if those all click, I can spend a couple weeks really reading up on the niche and blasting out 40-50k words while the knowledge is fresh and new. I can then just keep up with weekly posts / updates and put the thing on a 2 hour per week back burner as I launch into a different niche.

I know I have to crawl before I walk and that the site isn't up yet but I am feeling great about where I am at with the content writing. I can say that now that I know how much money people charge and pay to write stuff waaay worse than what I did. I feel like I saved $ 3,500.00 easy by banging out the writing myself in 2 weeks.

I have been spending lots of time reading new things on here and want to get back to it so I'll leave it here for now.

Its slow going here so far but its better than it was on 12/11/2020 when I started this journey which was at ZERO.

Hello there. First of all I would like to say that I can relate with procrastinating and being broke for long years and secondly I also have troubles with very long periods walking/standing up (scoliosis ftw) and all my life basically knew that I have to make my money with my brain not body.

It's really good and motivating to see you going and having your plans organized. I myself might post a journey once I figure out my moves properly now.

I am much into CPA and Single Opt-Ins for my second tryouts (I made 1 conversion ever during my tries) and also I am thinking of setting up a Self development oriented Youtube channel and a blog.

It seems like we have a similar journey, I am close to 28 though mate. I wish you well and I will be tracking your journey!

You should get back on the horse ASAP and use my stubborn but effect technique for learning and success.

Make sure each failure you were in control of is different and make sure to squeeze every drop of useful knowledge from that failure as revenge for wasting your time.

Success and wisdom will be inevitable failing in new ways instead of the same way over and over and over. Especially in a market like this because my goodness it seems to update and change with tides.

I remember an old quote in this ancient looking history book at my grandmas house when I was a little kid by this dude named Rick Sanchez and it said

“That’s planning for failure Morty. Even dumber than regular planning. “....Balls

While I agree I think even Mr. Sanchez would suggest learning from failures as much as you can to avoid the same out come if and when they do happen.

By the way , what in heck is a Single-Opt In? That’s something I couldn’t guess right with a thousand tries

This number is very surprising, 26,896 words for last week. I had a feeling I did well but this was better than I thought it would be. My plan for this site for launch date numbers was 30k words with 20-30 articles. My total right now with lasts weeks new numbers is now at 58,293 words with 48 articles. My plan for this site is to showcase a bunch of ways poor folks in the USA can get ahead using gig work while leaning new skills. I need to have the site up with my January budgets and incomes up by the last day or two of the month to be on target. I have twice the content I thought I would and still have a lot more to write for the launch of the site. This is going well but site 2 is a bit a behind so I wont celebrate yet.

I have no content updates for site two and will be spending much of this next week getting the numbers for this site up now that site 1 is way ahead on articles and content. The idea with site 2 is to focus more on video content and will have me trying to post a youtube video everyday. I will update social media platforms with my daily video updates as well and try to learn a different way to market and grow compared to site 1. That being said I still need another 20-30k words done for this site in the next couple weeks as my goal to myself was have both sites uop by the end of January.

So I am looking at a couple weeks to get these both live and will I will go buy a laptop for this sometime this week. I am written all the content so far on my 400 dollar Iphone and a decent blue tooth keyboard I got in a discount lot of electronics I got when I flipped store returns. I have been and will be doing this all very bootleg and on the cheap. I will take a picture of my little writing setup so people can see how to get started the bare, bare, bare bones way. I have killer fast google fiber internet though so life is good and I can still roll with a crappy setup.

I will hopefully have a much larger word count for site 2 on my next update and hopefully some videos for it too. The idea with my video series is to show progress in a hobby for people who also suck and need some real world motivation to get better. They can see my slow progress and use it to not get discouraged and that is my idea for the videos. I share this becacuse making these videos will be very , very easy. I plan on practicing my hobby for a 5 hours a week and will film all 5 hours per week. My video content will break down like this.

1 hour of practice video = 7 videos ( 6 x 10 min videos ) ( 1 hour long video)

5 hours of video a week would let me make 30-35 videos per week , which is the long term goal. I can also make more videos like these to expand the content of the channel and bait more hooks to get sales and make more money. Plus if I ever need more practice videos than I just practice more , its a win win. Every video can also be an ad for all the stuff I use without sounding super sales person about it, just a quick mention of my tools and supplies and link it below each video. This is my first site I plan on keeping and growing long term and I plan on trying to get creative with looking for sales and programs that make me more money than Amazon would. The niche allows me to also get into things like T-spring and other on demand print services so I can crate and push merch for this site as well.

I am thinking of doing joint merch ventures with people online to use that as a way to market and grow my new site while giving them a reason to bring up my site. I want to get this up without me spending money for it and this is one thing I can try. I could workout a percentage spilt for the merch or we could it for a charity, I don't really want to profit of these at first and I want to use it to get my followers up on youtube and other platforms. This hobby has lost of niches with-in niches and I can use people who won't be my direct competition to make new fans and sales from their traffic and fan base. I need to learn how to target people on pintrist, instragram and facebook with smaller followings so I can directly approach them all and try and get 10-20 people to say yes. That would be super helpful for a new site and I will start getting this is our middle of Feb so the site has some stuff on it for them to see. This would also help me get into some backlinks from these new contacts if I do it right, which is a nice bonus. The pitch would like this ( its a new idea so bare with me )

I would target 20 people at a time with smaller followings who are also looking to get bigger but are not yet big enough to charge me money. I will do a bit of looking around on their sites and accounts to see the vibe and energy that persons style is at . I then go to fivver and pay someone 100-200 to draw me 5 really cool artsy t shirt designs. I send the designs to all 20 people saying I havebeen inspired by the work they do and the contetn they make so I made these designs to celebrate my own site and would like to partner on the new shirt designs to celebrate small business and the hobby blah blah blah blah. I offer them a 50/50 split on the net profit of each shirt / hoodie they sell and send them a free one of each design they are willing to share and try and sell. I set up a t-spring account and have them make and ship the shirts to my new partners and then they advertise the shirt and shot out my site. I would also try to get a guest post at the same time but i figure this is worth it to try something different that might save money or make money instead of just spending cash on backlinks.

The hobby is an arts and crafts type of thing and not like heavy machine hobbys so I have lots of chances you review lots of items from 25 cents to 1,000s of dollars. I picked this niche for that reason and was also very happy to see that the aherf commeption for the major key words was super low too. That was some luck but I will take it. The Gig site for uber keywords are ranking more in the 40s where my hobby site is more like 4-15 so having both to compare will be nice. Now that I understand keywords and how to research them I am thinking of maybe switching up my plan a bit to write more articles for my hobby site. The competiton is simply too low and i think i might have accidently found a really good one that I should take advantege off. I enjoy this hobby a lot and plan on doing it for my entire life and seeing the low compettion makes me realize I might be able to be a top 3 site for this without tons and tons of backlink buying and large sums or money getting tossed into ads. I won;t hit this in a day but it seems more and more within my grasp everyday to be honest and I am happy to try a bunch of times to hit the top 3.


Making money of the first site will be a little more challenging in a traditional income way , for what I am used to. I will have to focus more on getting traffic up to get better banner ad play than what adsense offers , and I am starting to shop around directly to compaines to see if they offer commission programs for their goods and services. I have had decent luck with this so far and have already found a couple that I didn't read about on here and other places. I had a DashCam and went to their site and saw that they offer a goof commission program so that is somthing to look into for whatever it is you get in to. That DashCam which is an 1000 words artcile i can make in under an hour will make me a 5-10% sales commission for a product that averages 200-400 bucks. This on amazon would be a joke and it is worth looking into to make an extra 10-20 bucks per sale if you can.


I am going to get a very cheap laptop for like 200 bucks to get started and will be able to step this all up a few notches when I am not working from an Iphone and my roomamtes laptop.

I am surprised by my writing output so far and I am trying to get to 10,000 words in a 7 hour day. That is a ways off though.

I have a ankle that needs a surgery of two and will be aiming to get that done sometime this summer when I have some savings stashed away. I am ready to get moving again as I am starting to put on some weight , yikes!!!
